TERM 1 WEEK 6 MARCH 13, 2019 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEDear Parents/Guardians Last week’s Swimming Carnival was a wonderful opportunity to gather, encourage, cheer, move out of our comfort zones and to be with each other while having fun in the pool. The competition was fierce (that was just between staff!) and the atmosphere was positive. Carnivals take a significant amount of work to prepare and run and I thank Mrs Julie Hollick, all the parent volunteers and staff for their efforts to make both the Junior and Senior Carnivals a success. A list of the Swimming Champions is available in this newsletter and I congratulate all students who competed in races for the Championships and for their teams. The cheering was terrific and the amount of encouragement from student for each other was delightful to see. It’s an indication of the talent of our swimmers that many of the Swimming Championship medals were awarded to joint winners. The Swimming Carnival is a great example of celebrating physical achievement and at OLG we provide a holistic education where we celebrate the spiritual, physical, emotional and cognitive growth of all children. During Week 8 of this term parents, teachers and students will have the opportunity to sit together and discuss academic progress as well as how your child is travelling in demonstrating the “Keys to Success”. These keys are defined as resilience, confidence, getting along, persistence and organization. Our teachers have focused on these important personal skills this term and children will be able to discuss how they are using these skills to enhance their learning. Class teachers will be available throughout the Week 25th March before and after school and during the day to meet with you and your child for 15 minutes. Forms for appointments will be outside classrooms Monday next week. This week in the Parish Credo and in our social media outlets we have highlighted our Early Years programs and facilities. I am proud to be able to spotlight the wonderful resources, programs, community and staff in the early years. I have taken this opportunity to promote our early years as we embark on our Kindy interviews for 2021. If you have family or friends who are looking to become a part of the OLG School community please direct the information provided. I’d encourage all who are interested to contact Vicki Ryan to book a tour and interview. Positions will be confirmed by the end of Term 1. Newman College Parent Information Sessions 9 Ways to a Resilient Child (a FREE event for Early Childhood parents / guardians only) – Monday 25 March, 9.00am in the Marist Auditorium (216 Empire Avenue, Churchlands) Parents will learn the psychological secrets that build their child's sense of identity, strengths and growth mindset in order to perform better, be happier and build resilience. 9 Ways to a Resilient Child is based on Dr Justin Coulson's best-selling book, which shows parents how to help their children cope powerfully and positively with the challenges that life throws at them. This presentation is one of Justin's most popular presentations with powerful stories and illustrations that every parent can relate to. He explains the factors that help and hinder resilience, why common advice such as "toughen up Princess" just doesn't work, and how competition and praise may undermine resilience. Respectful Relationships; Love at Home (a FREE event for all parents / guardians) - Monday 25 March, 7.00pm in the Marist Auditorium (216 Empire Avenue, Churchlands) How to get along with your kids and help them get along with you (and their siblings). We all try to get along at home... but there are those uncomfortable niggles. There's the eye-rolling, the disrespect, the lack of motivation to help out, and the sibling warfare. If we're honest, most adults have been known to shout a bit too, and let's face it, we don't always listen that well to our kids. Conflict and friction at home cause more trouble than we need, and interfere with everyone's wellbeing. Wouldn't it be great if there were some simple, practical things we could do to help everyone get along better - starting right now? In this session, you'll learn the best 'relationship rules' for a happier family so home life really does feel loving... most of the time! The presentation will be followed by a Question and Answer session. Parents are to RSVP to me for both sessions: jo.dunn@cewa.edu.au These sessions are for parents only. We hope that parents will use the information they learn to better educate themselves. We acknowledge the original custodians of this land, the Nyungar people, and show our respect for their ancestors and traditions. Our Lady of Grace School |
