Mitchell Memo October 2013

Fly Southwest to Southwest Florida!

Southwest Airlines will launch new nonstop service from Milwaukee to Ft. Myers beginning November 3.  From now through the launch date, you can book trips using Southwest’s special fare of $129 each way!  Until November 3, travelers can continue flying nonstop to Ft. Myers on Southwest’s partner, AirTran.

Also on November 3, Southwest's nonstop New Orleans service will transition to AirTran service. As Southwest and AirTran continue to integrate their networks, you can book flights at either southwest.com or airtran.com.

Nonstop to Mexico and the Caribbean

The weather is starting to cool down a bit, and before you know it, snow flurries will begin to arrive in Milwaukee.  Once again, Mitchell Airport will help you escape with flights to warm weather destinations this winter.

AirTran, Delta, and Frontier are offering nonstop scheduled service from Milwaukee to Cancun through early April.  Funjet Vacations and Apple Vacations are providing nonstop charter service via AirTran to six destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean.  The flights will serve Cancun/Riviera Maya, Cozumel, Ixtapa, Puerto Vallarta, Jamaica, and Punta Cana from December through April.

The flights are bookable via funjet.com and applevacations.com.

Bag Claim Makeover

Please pardon our dust!  Mitchell Airport launched its Baggage Claim Renovation Project on September 19.  Look for lane restrictions if you’re driving into the Ticketing or Baggage Claim roadways.  Hint: the Cell Phone Lot is always a good alternative if you’re picking up passengers.

The interior and exterior of the Baggage Claim facility will be fully rebuilt, including the addition of a new glass canopy extending over the vehicle roadway.  The new building is expected to be LEED certified due to its energy efficient design.  A new, green roof will be visible from the parking garage skywalks, and a skylight will span the entire length of the building.

The original building dates back to the 1950s and was last remodeled in the mid-1980s.  The $45 million project is expected to be complete by late summer 2015.

Best Ways to Buy Airline Tickets

MKE has nonstop service to 36 cities and easy connections worldwide.  MKE is also the only airport in Wisconsin or Illinois with service from all the major domestic airlines.

Remember that some flights, such as those flown by Southwest, do not show up on websites like Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz.  Other airlines offer their lowest fares and fees only for tickets booked on their own websites.  Here is a handy flyer you can refer to or pass along to family, friends and co-workers.

Speed Your Way Through Security

TSA Pre✓ allows select frequent flyers from participating airlines and members of Trusted Traveler programs to use dedicated screening lanes and expedited security procedures.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is expected to launch TSA Pre✓ at Mitchell Airport on October 13.  Participating airlines typically invite their most frequent flyers to apply.  Click here for more information on TSA Pre✓.

Even Suitcases Love MKE!

Even suitcases know that Milwaukee's Mitchell Airport is the cost saving, easy travel alternative to O'Hare!  Check out our new web videos, which feature suitcases that are scared of flying from O’Hare.  But, when they find out they will fly from Milwaukee instead...well, just watch and see.

Going Above the Call of Duty

Mitchell Airport Operations Coordinator Eric Kaiser was the recipient of our Customer Service Award for September.  Eric pitched in when one of our airlines needed help handling bags and deplaning passengers.  His efforts went far above and beyond his job description, and helped the airline avoid a tarmac delay.  Congratulations on the award, Eric, and thanks for your outstanding customer service!

You can help us recognize the people who make your travel experience more pleasant.  If you have received outstanding customer service from anyone at Mitchell Airport, please tell us about it!  Click here for the Customer Service Award nomination form.

Names restored to B-25 Bomber

The original air crew names have been restored to the former Wisconsin Air National Guard B-25 aircraft on display next to the Mitchell Airport parking garage.  Captain Paul Poberezny and Crew Chief Anthony Wojnar flew the aircraft with the 128th Fighter Group in Milwaukee from 1958 to 1960.

Wojnar was present when the names were re-applied on August 28.  Poberezny, who also founded the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), recently passed away in Oshkosh.  Poberezny flew with the 128th for over 200 hours and was responsible for having the aircraft transferred to Milwaukee County for display at Mitchell Airport.

The restoration project was a joint effort of the Mitchell Gallery of Flight, the 128th Air Refueling Wing and Mitchell Airport.
