Ricco/Maresca Gallery: C.T. McClusky, "Circus Surreal"

From September 17 until October 24, 2020, the Ricco/Maresca Gallery will present the exhibition "C.T. McClusky: Circus Surreal".

Untitled, C.T. McClusky (late 1940s-1950s). Mixed media with collage on cardboard. 30.5 x 38 cm (12 x 15 in.)

McClusky was a circus clown who spent the winter seasons between the late 1940s and mid 1950s at a boarding house in Oakland, California. Working with found materials, he completed 53 mixed media collages on cardboard incorporating photographic cutouts, illustrations, as well as ephemera such as chocolate and candy wrappers. His vignettes from circus life are candid, nostalgic, and strikingly surreal.

"Discovering Collections" Part 1: Czech Mediumistic Art

MediumisticArt.com, managed by Vivienne Roberts, has launched a new series, "Discovering Collections", which focuses on "otherworldly" collections from around the world that aren't familiar with many people.

The first in the series is an exclusive interview with a couple from the Czech Republic about their incredible collection of Silesian mediumistic art and includes their new discoveries as well as well known artists, such as the largest collection of works by Josef Kotzian.

"When we first saw the drawings by Josef Kotzian, it was a strong inspiration for us to find out more about these drawings and the mediumistic world. We thought it would be an easy and fast journey. Today we know how naive we were."

"We started our investigation sixty years after the end of the activities of the [Spiritualists Brotherhood Society], and almost fifty years after the death of the most important Silesian mediumistic artist, Josef Kotzian, who changed his name in 1945 to Kocián."

"We are fascinated by every mediumistic drawing, but we are strongly attracted to the two shown here by Kotzian. It’s about the energy that radiates from these drawings, but of course that can affect everyone differently. This energy is non-transferable, so you need to hold the drawing in your hands and see all the details and let it affect you personally."
