The hardware that was no longer needed was donated to two charitable organizations: Herzensmenschen Rumänien e.V. Initiative im Bistum Mainz e.V. Fall Meeting of the Regional Group South ZELLCHEMING/VPMPlanning for the next events is underway. I hereby cordially invite you once again to the fall meeting of the Southern Regional Group on September 16-17 in Heidenheim. As the number of participants is limited due to hygiene regulations, we ask you to make your reservations as soon as possible. There are still a few places available. Click here for the program and registration. On the eve of the Paper Engineers Symposium in Dresden, we are planning a "ZELLCHEMING Meet & Greet" - more details to be announced. Until then and stay healthy! Kind regards, Petra Hanke ZELLCHEMING Virtual Days - Follow-upToday we are happy to publish a PDF with the highlights and a lot of positive feedback about the ZELLCHEMING Virtual Days 2021! For us, the digital event was a great challenge, which we mastered with high commitment together as a team and with outstanding support from our members, technical committees, sponsors and partner companies. Not only the quality of the event and the high number of participants, but also the feedback we received afterwards show that the project was crowned with success and, as our new deputy ZELLCHEMING chairwoman, Prof. Dr. Helga Zollner-Croll, puts it, "a benchmark has been set". Award ceremony winner Science Flash 2021Using tiny needle points and small balls against individual fibers - how do you measure mechanical properties? With this exciting presentation Julia Auernhammer won the ZELLCHEMING Science Flash competition at the Virtual Days on July 09, 2021. We would like to congratulate her once again. Our managing director, Petra Hanke, personally presented the prize to Ms. Auernhammer at the TU Darmstadt last week. Julia Auernhammer, Petra Hanke Save the date - ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2022We are looking towards the 2022 event (from June 29 to July 1, 2022 at the RMCC in Wiesbaden, Germany) already - thinking about how to incorporate the innovative elements of the Virtual Days. From society & industryEPRC: European paper value chain lives up to its commitment as it achieves 74% recycling rate in 2020The European paper value chain has proudly announced that it reached the trajectory set back in 2016 to achieve 74% recycling in 2020: 73.9% of all paper consumed in Europe was recycled in 2020. Due to the Covid-19 crisis, among others, less paper and board was consumed and available for collection last year, while its utilisation in the European Paper industry continued to be steady. Overall, collection of paper and board for recycling reached 56 million tonnes, while the consumption of paper and board decreased to 75.8 million tonnes in the EU27, Norway Switzerland and the United Kingdom. This explains a further increase of the recycling rate. The European Paper Recycling Council (EPRC) was set up as an industry self-initiative to monitor progress towards meeting the paper recycling targets set out in the 2000 European Declaration on Paper Recycling. CEPI: European paper and board consumption decreased by 5.3% in 2020With the slowing down of the European economy and the sanitary restrictions, European paper and board consumption decreased by 5.3% in 2020 compared to 2019, totalling 71 million tonnes. Cepi members produced 85.2 million tonnes of paper and board, a decrease of 4.8% compared to 2019. In 2020, the pandemic accelerated the structural decline of graphic grades but stimulated the production of packaging grades as well as sanitary and household paper. The overall output of graphic grades including newsprint fell by 19%. Demand from publishers, offices and commercial printing declined dramatically. In contrast, the packaging paper and board as well as the sanitary and household paper production increased by 2.1% and 3.1% respectively in 2020 while speciality paper and board production remained stable. Also impacted by the economic slow-down and the decrease in paper and board production, pulp consumption decreased by 6.4%. Total pulp production decreased by 4.7% while market pulp output remained unchanged. From the membershipStora Enso's pilot plant for producing lignin-based carbon materials for batteries starts operationThis follows the company’s EUR 10 million investment announced in 2019. Pilot production of Lignode by Stora Enso, wood-based carbon for batteries, is currently being ramped up. Applications include electric vehicles and consumer electronics as well as large-scale energy storage systems. The global battery market is projected to grow tenfold over the next decade. Since sustainability is becoming a top priority for the automotive industry, car manufacturers and battery producers are focusing heavily on reducing carbon emissions in electric cars. Today, fossil-based carbon is used in the anodes of rechargeable batteries. By converting lignin separated from wood into carbon-based anode materials, the synthetic and non-renewable graphite material can be replaced. The pilot plant for bio-based carbon materials is located at Stora Enso’s Sunila production site, Finland, where lignin has been industrially produced since 2015. The biorefinery’s annual lignin production capacity is 50 000 t, making the company the largest kraft lignin producer in the world. Book publicationThe dissertation of ZELLCHEMING member Robert Götzinger was published by Shaker Verlag under the title "Development of a sheet former for the generation of highly oriented paper for building with paper as well as composites for lightweight construction with paper". Motivated by the project "BAMP! Bauen mit Papier", various variables influencing the orientation of fibers during sheet formation, and their relationship between fiber orientation in the paper and paper properties, were first researched as part of this dissertation. Based on these findings, a novel sheet former for the production of highly oriented papers was developed in several iteration steps. New ZELLCHEMING membersWe welcome as new members of ZELLCHEMING:
From the technical committees and regional groupsInformation from the technical committee Microbiology (MBIO)The table of biocidal active substances was compiled by the members of the ZELLCHEMING Technical Committee Microbiology (MBIO) 2020/2021 (to the best of their knowledge). It is intended to provide an overview of commonly used biocidal active substances in the paper industry and is based on the active substances listed in BfR XXXVI. Brief information on the mode of action, range of action and special features of the substances is to be given, which allows orientation for possible purposes of use. Detailed questions cannot be answered and are not the aim of this information. With regard to the regulations (XXXVI, FDA), the technical committee refers to the current status, which is also stated. For the products of the individual manufacturers, the data and the information of the manufacturers are authoritative, which are drawn up on the basis of the product composition. The document is available for download on the information page of the Technical Committee on Microbiology. Dates
