Hi Welcome to GMDSI's first newsletter! We've added you to our mailing list as you signed up for our recent webinar series, and we hope you'll be interested to hear about our ongoing activities, such as upcoming courses, free resources and more. Our website is now live! The site serves as a source of ideas, inspiration and discussion, as well as a platform to share resources and opportunities. You can already access resources from our recent webinar series, a range of educational videos, and information about our mission and activities. Over time, we’ll be developing and sharing other resources, including:
We also aim to host and facilitate discussions that complement our webinars. You can also keep up to date with our activities by following us on Twitter or LinkedIn. Our first worked example describes a model that answers hard questions about groundwater supply security for the township of Biggenden in south east Queensland. It demonstrates that use of a relatively small observation dataset, combined with ‘Soft Data’ about qualitative and intuitive conceptual model knowledge, can constrain prediction uncertainty and support decision making. This is achieved using PEST_HP for history matching, and PESTPP-IES to assess uncertainties in water supply security. The example challenges standard practice on placement of model boundary conditions, and demonstrates what can be achieved using a small domain single-layer model, modern modelling toolsets, and with applied thought and logic. Join the Groundwater Modelling Decision Support ForumWe've established a LinkedIn group as a platform for knowledge sharing and discussion. Join the forum to hear our latest updates as soon as they're available, other useful industry information, and to get support and inspiration from colleagues and GMDSI expertise. The group is supported by the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training / Flinders University, BHP and Rio Tinto. Webinar series attracts international audienceGMDSI recently hosted a four-part webinar series – plus online Q&A session – aiming to foster a global dialogue on groundwater modelling for decision support. The series focused on decision-support modelling principles and practice, and aimed to assist those who build decision-support models to extend their skills and to empower those who commission or rely on models. The sessions were attended by nearly 1500 people from across Australia and around the world, spanning Commonwealth and state governments, academia, consultancies and industry, demonstrating a strong demand for training on this topic. If you missed out or would like to review the materials, you can watch the recordings or access the PowerPoint slides on our website. |
