Penis Transplants in the U.S.? Surgeons Plan Experimental Program

Transplants, such as the kidney or liver, are fairly commonplace nowadays. But how about penis transplants?

If surgeons at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine are successful, such transplants might be offered in the future.

The university has approved 60 transplants for a clinical trial. The first patients will be soldiers who have lost part or all of their genitals in combat.

Donor penises will come from deceased men with their families' permission.

Only two other transplants have taken place worldwide. One was successful, the other was not. The transplants at Johns Hopkins will be the first attempted in the United States.

Did you know? Asexuals and Masturbation

In general, people who identify as asexuals don't feel sexual attraction to others, nor do they feel driven to have sex.

So why did a team of researchers find that masturbation is common in this group?

The Canadian scientists surveyed a group of 534 asexuals and found that over half masturbated at least once a month.

The reasons are complex. For some, masturbation isn't about sexual feelings.  For others, sexuality is a continuum.  They might feel sexual from time to time or in certain situations.
