Wine & Spirits Year's Best Pinot Noir 2015

SPRING NEWS AND REVIEWS

Spring is here, and it has been feeling that way for a number of weeks in Northern California. We've had a relatively warm and very dry winter, which means things are sprouting early (and earlier than last year). We have just returned from Chicago, where we poured at our eighth Pinot Days Chicago even, to a very busy crowd. And two weeks before that we were in Santa Barbara for World of Pinot Noir. It's also been a busy time for Waits-Mast in the press, so we're excited to have some great reviews to share with you and all of the beautiful prose that comes with them. There are also upcoming events and new restaurant placements, so read on, take a walk in the forest and enjoy all that spring has to offer.

RECENT REVIEWS

Wine & Spirits: Year's Best Pinot Noir. Every April, Wine & Spirits Magazine culls from its reviews across the year and ranks its top Pinot Noir wines from North America. Out of 1,300+ Pinot Noirs reviewed, only 175 or so make the final cut and our 2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Deer Meadows Vineyard, Anderson Valley was included in this ranking with a rating of 92 points. Here are the accompanying tasting notes from the review:

"Brian Mast and Jennifer Waits pull this wine from a vineyard planted at 1,600 feet, far into the hills of the Anderson Valley. It’s silky and clean, a burst of red fruit that opens into wisps of wood smoke and leafy undergrowth scents. Vinous and firm, it’s already showing well, and feels poised to develop in interesting directions with four or five years of age."

We made 97 cases of this wine (which also was included in the San Francisco Chronicle Top 100 Wines last year) and have about half of this production remaining. Click here to see your allocation and purchase today.

PinotFile: Review of Waits-Mast 2012 Vintage. Rusty Gaffney, MD, aka The Prince of Pinot, has reviewed many of our Pinot Noir wines over the years and is a regular attendee and speaker at the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival, World of Pinot Noir and more. He recently reviewed our lineup of 2012 Pinot Noir; here are some highlights from his blog, PinotFile:

2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Nash Mill Vineyard, Anderson Valley: "Like a walk in the forest, this wine smells of conifer and earthy spices. An intriguing palate featuring flavors of black cherry, baking spice, and mocha. Tricked out with a velvety mouthfeel and firm structural bones. Highly unique and interesting, and difficult to describe, but I really like it. Even better later the same day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Serious goodness. Score: 93" PURCHASE

2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Deer Meadows Vineyard, Anderson Valley: "Shy, but pleasing aromas of darker stone and berry fruits. Impressive attack of nicely ripened boysenberry and pomegranate fruit backed by firm tannins. The finish is especially noteworthy with plenty of spice and fruit to please. Should benefit from another year or two in bottle. Score: 92" PURCHASE

2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Mariah Vineyard, Mendocino Ridge: "Interesting aromas of cherry, sous-bois, iron and a hint of smoky oak. Light in weight with good finesse, offering flavors of cherry, boysenberry and spice. Score: 89" PURCHASE

2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Wentzel Vineyard, Anderson Valley: "Shy aromas of cherry and raspberry replicated in the flavors. Laden with blueberry, raspberry and spice, framed by good acid tension...Cellar this one for a year or two. Score: 88-89" PURCHASE

2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Oppenlander Vineyard, Mendocino County: "Highly enjoyable with a touch of oak seasoning and a subtle earthy, feral note typical of this vineyard. Nicely balanced tannins and some finishing intensity. Great potential here but will require some patience. Score: 90-91" PURCHASE

WHERE TO TRY AND BUY

Pinot Noir tasting event season continues this spring and we're excited to pour at the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival in Philo on May 16, 2015. And mark your calendars for the Taste of Mendocino in San Francisco on June 2 at the beautiful Golden Gate Club in the Presidio. Later in June is Pinot Days San Francisco at City View/Metreon on June 20, another scenic venue in San Francisco. We hope to see you at one (or more!) of these events in the coming months.

If you're out and about in San Francisco, you can now find our wines at Union Larder, a wine, cheese and charcuterie bar in North Beach. They are now carrying our 2011 Londer Vineyard Pinot Noir and our 2012 Deer Meadows Vineyard Pinot Noir. Also carrying the 2011 Londer by the glass is AQ Restaurant in San Francisco and La Stazione Coffee & Wine Bar in the Dogpatch neighborhood.

And if you are a fan of our 2011 Pinot Noir from Mendocino County, our special two-barrel blend, you'd better get some now because it is very popular at a local restaurant in San Francisco and we'll likely sell out in the next month or so. Also on the last-chance list: 2010 Oppenlander, only 9 bottles left! Find these and more in our webstore.
