Are We Passing Obesity Onto Our Children? |
|
|
We all want the best for our children, but often we feel helpless to monitor everything they’re eating or
how much activity they’re getting. But it turns out their bad habits are mimicked and learned from
adults. As we do better with our health, they do better as well. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true.

you can teach them, often without saying a word. |

Healthy Tip: Top 10 Alternative Uses for Olive Oil |
|
|
Olive oil has dozens of uses you may not have considered before. The fact that it’s renewable and less
expensive than the products it can replace is simply the icing on the... err... the oil on the salad!
1. Get a Close Shave. Olive oil is a safe and natural lubricant for a close shave. The advantages are
plenty: There’s no need for water; you can actually see what you’re shaving (great way to avoid shaving
a pimple!); olive oil is eco-friendly; and it costs much less than traditional shave cream. Tip: Rub in an
extra teaspoon to moisturize after washing your body or face afterward.
2. Polish Wood Furniture, Stainless Steel, and Brass. Restore the luster of your wood furniture or shine
your stainless steel or brass, and prevent tarnish, with a teaspoon of olive oil and a soft rag. For wood
polish, add a bit of vinegar or lemon juice for better cleaning power and a fresh scent.
3. Nice Nails. Strengthen brittle fingernails by soaking them weekly (or even daily) for 10 to 15 minutes
in a shallow bowl of warm olive oil. The moisture absorbs easily into the fingernails, cuticle, and skin,
which works to strengthen nails.
4. Unstick Your Zipper. You never again have to tear up your nails, your fingers, or your fabric trying to
unstick a zipper! Simply use a cotton swab to dab olive oil onto the teeth of the zipper, then gently ease
the tab down.
5. Kitty Care. To help prevent hairballs, as well as promote a shiny coat, add a teaspoon of olive oil to
your cat’s food. (Note: don’t put it directly on the coat, as you don’t want them licking it off and causing
even more hairballs!) Olive oil is gentler (and more renewable!) than the petroleum-based hairball
formulas.
6. Exfoliate, Soften, Moisturize. Exfoliate by rubbing your skin with olive oil, then scrub with sugar or
coarse salt, and rinse. Soften by adding a few tablespoons of olive oil to your running bath water. You’ll
be amazed when you towel off. Moisturize by applying olive oil daily on typically dry areas, especially
after a shower, shaving, or waxing.
7. Remove Car Grease or Paint from Your Skin or Hair. Use a cotton ball or cloth to rub olive oil onto
messy parts, like hands, arms, face, and hair, and allow the oil to soak in for five minutes. After rinsing
with soap and water, not only will your skin be cleaner, it will be softer.
8. Muzzle a Squeaky Hinge. Use a rag or cotton ball or swab to coat the top of a problematic hinge in
your home or automobile with olive oil, letting it run down by moving the door back and forth. Wipe off
excess.
9. Soothe Your Throat. It’s the season for scratchy, ticklish throats. Dryness and coughing can be
relieved by just a teaspoon of olive oil to coat the throat. The anti-inflammatory properties help soothe
pain and inflammation. This can also lubricate the back of the mouth and tonsil area to help lessen
snoring. Limit consumption to a tablespoon every three hours, as it’s also a gentle, effective laxative
when used in larger amounts.
10. Remove Chewing Gum. When your child comes home from school with a blob of sticky bubble gum
in her hair, no need for crazy tricks or scissors to get it out. Apply a small amount of olive oil to the gum
and to the hair surrounding it, leave it on for five minutes, and then use a comb to gently release the
gum from the hair. |
