December 2020 News HEADLINESScottish public overwhelmingly in favour of a globally responsible ScotlandThe vast majority of the Scottish public say the Scottish Government should take into account the global effects of all its policy decisions, according to new polling commissioned by Scotland’s International Development Alliance. Respondents also voiced very strong support for the Scottish Government taking an active global role by working towards peace, equality and sustainability. ODA slashed by a third – where now?The UK government’s announcement to make massive ‘temporary’ cuts to official development assistance at the end of November caused dismay, outrage and sadness throughout the international development sector in Scotland and beyond. The budgetary justification for doing so is not only weak, but the decision also risks undermining claims of international leadership by the UK Government at a time of unprecedented global crises. So what now? Here at the Alliance we think there is more to say on this issue, especially when swathes of the UK public don’t seem that bothered by the decision. The fight to retain 0.7% will go on. Scottish Government Review of International DevelopmentThe ongoing Scottish Government International Development review is due to be completed by 31 December 2020. NDCs (or national climate plans and emissions targets) are central to the Paris Agreement and countries are required to update their NDCs every five years, starting with this year.
