Dear Spiritual Adventurers
As the Spring is upon us in many parts of the world, it's a good time to do some internal Spring cleaning!
I came across something in my readings the other week that was such a dose of truth that all at once it made me take responsibility yet at the same time allowed me to excuse myself for being human.
It is all too easy for us to beat ourselves up right? We find ourselves rushing around after our goals, that perfect lifestyle, the next organic craze yet at the same time beating ourselves up for having that chocolate bar or bag of crisps!
Well I want to share with you what I found:
"...but in the view of the natural tendency in everyone to let his desires rule his reason, truth has to be repeated often so that it may be made more clear."
~ Gandhi
Now as the spiritual warriors you will all be familiar with the difference between knowing something and being something and all the internal struggles that entails.
This is a classic case of our desires ruling our reason. We have all been there & still are there! But instead of being hard on ourselves for being human, we could accept that this is part of a long journey.
Hearing a truth over and over until we finally get it is normal. It's not a sign of failure, in fact it's a sign of success. A willingness to really take responsibility.
Now I am going to go deeper with this one.
If we yearn inside for chocolate for example, yet deny it to ourselves thinking we are great in doing so, we may aswell have the chocolate & enjoy it. For it is more harmful to be a hypocrite than to have that bar of delight, as hypocrisy has no place on an authentic spiritual path.
Once we still aspire to someday kick that bad habit, in acknowledging our desires we are being kinder to ourselves. Why? Well I think it is summed up nicely in this quote:
"The psychological effects of our actions in past lives cannot be wiped out all at once. Waves of desire will continue to rise. They will drench us again & again, but one day they will leave us dry."
~ Gandhi
In other words by being human you are being real. If beneath your desires that get the better of you from time to time, is a genuine willingness to move beyond them someday, you are on an authentic spiritual path that is much more powerful than the one of hypocrisy.
I do hope that brings you the same relief it brought me!
Much love,
Lisa
