Alumni and Student Spotlight

Scholarship established to honor Keith Ewing, EHS ‘55

Keith Ewing was born in Seattle on June 14, 1936 to Georgia Ewing Mattson and Kenneth Albert Ewing. He grew up in Edmonds where he graduated from Edmonds High School in 1955. He earned a master’s degree in meteorology from the University of Washington and began his career with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Great Falls, Montana. In 1994 Keith retired from the NWS having spent 26 years at the Redwood City, California office. He was the lead forecaster for the San Francisco Bay Area and northern California during the last fifteen of those years. In 1987 Keith became a member of NEXRAD which is short for Next Generation Radar. This team of weather forecasters were specifically tasked to help the Raytheon and Unisys companies as they developed their proposals for building and upgrading our country's new weather radar system to include Doppler high-resolution capability.

Keith was an avid bridge player, a runner, and a 210 average bowler. He also owned and piloted a Cessna 210. In 1967, he met Mary Schmidt at a Redwood City bridge game and invited her to take a ride in his "bird." She was hooked when what she expected to be a Ford sports car actually flew.  On Valentine's day in 1970 they wed and began what would become 30 years of wonderful married life.

Over the years, a major portion of his free time was spent as a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society. Sadly, he passed away on October 21, 2000 from complications arising from esophageal cancer. To honor his memory, Mary has established the Keith Lewis Ewing $4,000 post-secondary scholarship. This will be awarded annually to a graduating Edmonds School District student who is either hearing impaired and/or is pursuing a career in audiology, prosthetics, or orthopedics

Alumna Giving Back

For the owners and members of the Lynnwood gym, CrossFit Industrious, being part of the gym’s community means not only bettering your own life, but giving back to the community. Owners, Molly and Steven Hitt are passionate about the gym’s motto of “Work Hard, Live Fit” and bring that to all they do in building the gym’s culture. Molly (Hunsinger) Hitt, an alumna of the Edmonds School District, attended Oak Heights Elementary and graduated from Lynnwood High School. Both of her parents graduated from Woodway High School. For Molly and Stephen, giving back to the community has been a natural extension of their goals to better the lives of our community. They have demonstrated this mission with their support of the Foundation for Edmonds School District’s Nourishing Network program which provides weekend meals to homeless students in the school district.

At Lynnwood High School, Molly played volleyball, basketball and tennis. She graduated from University of Puget Sound where she played volleyball. Molly is energetic, friendly and dedicated to her clients’ fitness. She and Stephen met at a CrossFit facility in 2010 and went on to open CrossFit Industrious together in October 2011. Stephen also works at Mountlake Terrace High School coaching football and strength/conditioning.

Molly and Stephen wanted their business to give back to the community and started a food drive in 2011. Even at this time of low unemployment, they recognize that there are folks in our community who are in need. They started small, but significantly, by donating 150 pounds of food. Things moved quickly when they teamed up with the Foundation for Edmonds School District and the Nourishing Network Pantry. This year the Hitts and their clients will have raised over 2000 pounds of food. Donated items will go to support 133 homeless students at 22 schools with weekend meals and snacks. For many students that rely on free or reduced lunch at school, weekends can mean times of food scarcity, and the Nourishing Network helps families bridge that gap. The Hitts are truly giving back to their community and making a difference.

CrossFit Industrious is a place that is welcoming, purposeful and positive. Molly and Stephen are running a business, and adding to the community in a positive and meaningful way. The gym is located at 21609 Hwy 99 Ste C (across from Value Village) in Lynnwood. You can also get in touch with them at (425) 582-9598 and online.
