Men With Bipolar Disorder at Risk for ED, Study Says
Physicians who treat men with bipolar disorder should "consider the risk of ED," researchers suggest.
Their recent Journal of Sexual Medicine study found a higher risk for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men with bipolar disorder, compared to men without the condition.
The study looked at ED rates for 5,150 men in Taiwan who had been recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The researchers identified two matched controls for each man.
ED was present in 2.12% of the bipolar group and 0.95% of the control group.
The rate remained higher for men with bipolar disorder even after accounting for mental health medications that can have sexual side effects.
