House Specialty Program Week 5 Information

Want to know the House Specialty menu for next week? Check it out here.

This is a friendly reminder that the House Specialty Program will continue regularly scheduled pickups even on no-school days including:

  • 10/9 - Faculty Professional Development Day (Friday)
  • 10/10 - Indigenous Peoples' Day (Monday)
  • 11/11 - Veteran’s Day (Wednesday)
  • 11/20 - Faculty Evaluation Writing Day (Friday)

Because of the complex nature of the Dining Program, we will continue to provide regular meal pickup on these days and will be unable to reschedule any skipped or missed pickups. If you do not intend to pick up on any of these days, please email Leilani Nussman ASAP.

Thank you to those who have inquired about reusing the paper bags used to pack the House Specialty meals. Unfortunately for safety and sanitation reasons, we cannot reuse the bags. Please reuse, recycle, or compost them at your homes!

Finally, thank you to the International Parent Reps for their contribution of Asian Pears to the House Specialty bag last week in honor of the Mid-autumn Festival and Grace N. ’21 for her beautiful artwork celebrating the occasion.

Q&A with Our New Health Coordinator

In last week's E-News, we introduced Sierra Maxwell, our new Health Coordinator at The Northwest School. This week, we have posted a short Q&A with Sierra, covering her experience and what she is most excited about in joining our community.

Library Book Delivery Service

The Northwest School Library is excited to announce that our book delivery service will kick off the week of Oct. 19! Books can be picked up, along with your dinners, at locations across the city. Space is limited on each route, so get your requests in early. Fill out this survey with either specific titles that you’d like (browse the catalog first to see if they are a part of our collection) or tell us a bit about your reading habits so the librarians can pick out books for you based on your preferences. The survey needs to be completed by Sunday, Oct. 11. You’ll receive an email reminder on the day of your pickup.

Click here to peruse our library catalog.

Note: This won't be a weekly service. The next book delivery will be the week of Nov. 9th.

Reflecting on the Great NWS Campout

What a joy it was to see the many ways the Northwest School community spent time outdoors last weekend. Thank you to everyone who participated, both formally and informally, near and far. Take a minute to scroll through the posts on the Great NWS Campout Padlet if you haven’t already. There are some gems!

Keep seeking meaningful time outdoors, even as the weather changes. Stay posted to E-News and the Outdoor Program website for upcoming experiences and opportunities to connect.

It’s Happening! Dough & Joe is Oct. 14

Do you miss The House? You’re in luck! Dough & Joe, our yearly annual fund collection and gratitude event is still happening, but with a twist. Mark your calendar and then swing by Wednesday, Oct. 14, 11:00 am-1:00 pm. Faculty will be on hand midday to accept your annual fund donation envelopes (and will be passing out treats as well). You don't even need to get out of your car; we will come to you! Simply drive on Crawford Street and look for us at the Fanny Brice window.

Please contact Julie Lombardo at 206-816-6208 with any questions.

Senior Day Off, Oct. 21

The 12th Grade faculty team, in conjunction with the administration, has decided that all seniors will have the day off from school on Wednesday, Oct. 21. We know that you are diligently working, training, reading, writing, and going to many zoom calls and meetings. We want you to have a day when you can get caught up, finish up essays, finalize that application, sleep in, go for a long walk, and have a day with a little less busyness.

That evening is also the final college app work party before early application deadlines. We hope you can use this day to knock off as much as you can from your college lists and come back to school with mental space a little clearer and energized. You do not need to go to Community Meeting or Advisory, but you are welcome to join in anywhere, especially affinity groups.

The Great Washington Shakeout, Oct. 15

The Great Washington Shakeout is occurring on Oct. 15. We would like to use the event to remind students and families to check their emergency supplies and practice proper drop, cover, and hold techniques on that day.

Seattle Area Independent Schools Summit, Oct. 18

Eleventh and 12th grade students and families from Seattle area independent schools are invited to a series of panel discussions with admissions counselors on Sunday, Oct. 18, with panels beginning at 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm, and 4:00 pm.

Topics include Class of 2021 and COVID-19, Honors Colleges, Financial Aid, STEM at Liberal Arts Colleges, Test-Optional Admissions, BIPOC in College, Colleges in a Consortium, and more. Students can view the schedule and register here. The panels will be recorded for our international students and others who are unable to attend the live presentations.

It’s been many months since we’ve had parents and students in the Farm/Garden and we are excited to invite you back! We will have staggered start times and maintain physical distance. Please RSVP here no later than Wednesday, Oct. 21.
