The history of organized competitive swimming dates back to the early
1900's. As its popularity increased through the years, the demand for
improved swimming pool design increased as well. Today,
Counsilman-Hunsaker continues to lead the industry in the most sophisticated
designs developed worldwide. Below are some of the highlights of new
competition pools currently on the boards at Counsilman-Hunsaker.
Pan American Games Aquatics Centre and Field House
The Pan American Games are one of the world's largest international multi-sport
events, held every four years for athletes of the 42 member nations of the Pan
American Sport Organization. High-performance pools are being designed for
the 2015 Pan American Games to host simming, diving, water polo and synchronized
swimming.
The Aquatics Centre will include three bodies of water: a 1,300 square meter competition pool with 10 lap lanes and two moveable bulkheads; a 550 square meter dive pool with a five-level diving tower and four springboards; and
a 1,300 square meter warm-up pool with 10 lap lanes, two moveable bulkheads and
two moveable floors. The facility is slated to be complete in the summer
of 2014.
Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex
The Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex (FLAC), originally constructed in 1965, was
considered a leader and pioneer among the world's top aquatic centers, hosting
hundreds of national and international events. After nearly 50 years of
serving the community, the city made the decision to renovate the facility in
order to ensure a sustainable revenue source.
The newly redesigned FLAC will be a state-of-the-art multi-use recreational
entertainment facility of superior design, while maintaining its status as a
renowned competitive swimming and diving venue. Redevelopment of the
aquatics complex includes: 14,300 square foot competition pool; 6,200
square foot dive pool; 12,000 square foot training pool; 800 square foot
learn-to-swim pool; and an acclimation spa. This new complex will be ideal
for hosting short-course competition swimming, platform and springboard diving,
in addition to water polo and synchronized swimming events.
Northern Arizona University
Construction of a new 64,500 square foot aquatic center is planned to replace
the 30-year-old Wall Aquatic Center located at Northern Arizona University.
The new facility will include a 50 meter pool, 25 yard lap pool, and a spa
which will support athletic events for competitive swimming, diving and
recreational activities for students and the Flagstaff community.
