1. E. coli O103 count nears 200 as outbreak hits 10 states13.05.2019 US. E.Coli
As of today, another 19 patients have been added to the toll in an E. coli outbreak traced to ground beef, bringing the total number of people with laboratory-confirmed infections to almost 200.
First announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on April 5, the outbreak has grown from 72 people in five states to 196 people across 10 states. Two companies have recalled ground beef in relation to the outbreak. Almost 80 percent of the victims specifically recall eating ground beef in the days before becoming sick. 4. Ukraine poultry industry hits back at criticism16.05.2019. Ukraine. Food Safety The Poultry Union of Ukraine has hit back at criticism of its industry, urging a “fact-based debate rather than fake news”. The trade body took umbrage at allegations that Ukrainian products weren’t fully compliant with all EU legislation on

6. Authorities bust criminal ring dealing in ‘yellow gold’ aka fake olive oil16.05.2019. Europe. Food Fraud. Authorities have dismantled an organized crime group trading in adulterated olive oil in Germany and Italy.
The operation named “Oro Giallo” -Yellow gold in English -involving Europol, Eurojust, the NAS Carabinieri from Italy, the Italian public prosecution office of Foggia, and the tribunal of Darmstadt in Germany, led to the arrest of 24 people and seizure of 150,000 liters of fake olive oil estimated to have a commercial value of €1.2 million ($1.34 million). 7. Alfalfa sprouts linked to Salmonella outbreak in New Zealand11.05.2019. New Zealand. Salmonella.
Almost 70 people have fallen ill in New Zealand with Salmonella infections from alfalfa sprouts.GSF Fresh New Zealand recalled some of its Pams, Sproutman and Fresh Harvest branded sprout products because of a “production process concern” at the end of March.A spokesman from the Ministry of Health told Food Safety News that the outbreak is over but sporadic cases could continue to occur if the recalled product is eaten and infected people do not practice good personal hygiene. 8. UK Trade Secretary won’t rule out post-Brexit imports of chlorine chicken and hormone beef16.05.2019. UK. Food Safety. Liam Fox, the UK trade secretary, declined to rule out allowing imports of chlorine-washed chicken of beef raised using growth hormones into the UK after Brexit, insisting the issue is not one of food
safety. Speaking during a Q & A at the Institute of Government yesterday (15 May), Fox said that the complexities of World Trade Organization rules meant that the debate over whether to allow these products – which are currently not allowed to enter the European Union – was “slightly different” to the question of whether to drop the UK’s own high production standards. The ethnic Kazakh couple died on 1 May in Mongolia's westernmost province of

10. Most Germans have heard of Salmonella but not Campylobacter15.05.2019. Germany. Food Safety. Less than a third of people in Germany have heard of Campylobacter, according to a survey by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). Campylobacter, the most common bacterial pathogen of diarrheal diseases, was better known than last
year, but still only 28 percent of people had heard of it. From 2012 to 2016, Germany, along with the Czech Republic and United Kingdom, were the European countries that reported the most cases per year. Source: Food Safety News
