One in Five
A podcast about disability research

Today, on International Day of People with Disability, we are proud to release One in Five: a new podcast that explores some of the most complex issues facing people with disability today. In Australia, one in five people live with disability. The podcast gives voice to people with disability and asks about their experiences with employment, housing, the law, supporting families and early intervention. A range of experts including people with disability, researchers and people working in the sector talk about what we can do to improve the lives of people with disability.

The first three episodes are live now, with more coming. To be the first to hear when new episodes are available, subscribe here.

Our first episode When the Rubber hits the Road is all about employment. We talk about finding and keeping work with a mental health condition or psychosocial disability and the challenges for young people with disability transitioning from school into paid work. In part two, we ask what employers can do to create more inclusive workplaces?

Stuck in the Middle tackles the issue of housing. We talk about private rental and public housing, and we find out about initiatives like individualised supported living and shared equity arrangements. The broader housing policy context is explored as well as the priorities ahead to deliver a system that’s fair, equitable and safe for the growing number of Australians with disability.
