GIC warns of energy shortages by 2026

A warning there may not be enough natural gas to keep the lights on and ensure security of supply for electricity by 2026 must be listened to, according to Energy Resources Aotearoa.

The new report by the industry co-regulator the Gas Industry Company (GIC) warns that constrained gas supply could lead to energy shortages, higher prices and job losses.

“New Zealand has enough natural gas in the ground to meet demand until 2035 and beyond, but this won’t happen without major investment by producers,” says Energy Resources Aotearoa chief executive John Carnegie.

“This is a strong and clear warning on the need for the right settings to encourage much-needed investment.

“We agree with the report which finds a lack of predictability in policy settings is hampering investment at every level of the industry."

This week Energy Resources held a workshop for members with the GIC to discuss the paper. Submissions are due by 24th June and final advice will then be prepared by the GIC for the Minister of Energy and Resources who requested this work programme.

Panel event: Energy Crisis - Fact or Fiction?

Energy Resources Aotearoa is proud to host this panel event discussing the current challenges and opportunities facing the energy sector.

With sharp electricity prices and reduced natural gas supplies, it is a deeply challenging time for New Zealand’s energy sector.

  • What kind of impact will this have on jobs and our economy?
  • Is this a temporary challenge solely due to a dry year?
  • What role does gas play in New Zealand’s energy transition?
  • What can we do to build a more resilient future energy sector?

Our panelists include:

  • Henrik Mosser (General Manager - OMV)
  • Vince Hawksworth (Chief Executive - Mercury)
  • Terry Skiffington (Chief Operating Officer - Oji Fibre Solutions)
  • Phil O’Reilly (Managing Director - Iron Duke Partners)

John Kidd (Enerlytica) will facilitate the discussion, followed by Q&A from the floor and a final wrap-up. Reservations are essential and are free for Energy Resources Aotearoa members.
