LATEST NEWSHealth Beyond Research and Innovation Showcase The Health Beyond Showcase was held on 5 – 6 June 2019, SWSLHD and Ingham Institute’s annual celebration of research and innovation projects. As in previous years, cancer research was strongly represented including a keynote presentation from Prof Meera Agar, an update on the Radiation Oncology Academic Unit, Cancer breakout sessions and updates from the 2018 Innovation Tank winners. Breast cancer cell atlas Researchers from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research are developing a 'Breast Cancer Cell Atlas', which will provide unprecedented insights into the complex molecular environment of breast cancers and, potentially, help develop better treatments. World-first trial to compare tailored text messaging to traditional telephone support for smoking cessation Dr Ryan Courtney, who heads smoking prevention and intervention research at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC), UNSW Sydney, will lead a multinational team in a trial of tailored text messaging treatment for smoking cessation among low-socioeconomic status (low-SES) smokers. New sensor to help detect early-stage cancer A group of chemists from UNSW Sydney’s Australian Centre for NanoMedicine (ACN) and biologists from UNSW's Lowy Cancer Research Centre have created an early version of the first 'nanopore blockade sensor' that can analyse disease biomarkers at a rapid, single molecule level. The new sensor is among new technologies that was presented at the 10th annual International Nanomedicine Conference. Introducing CONCERT's Communications Officer Linda Music joins South West Sydney Research and CONCERT as their Communications Officer. Linda has an extensive background in communications having worked for government organisations, not-for-profits, multinational corporates, advocacy groups as well as national magazines and specialist newspapers. Linda’s talent lies in storytelling. Her ability to discover, unearth and craft a story which brings to life the human condition, is her speciality. The scheme will support projects with funding and expert advice on preparing data for publication and solutions for making data available. Funding of up to $15k is available per project for the publication of existing data collections. Deadline: 12 July 2019 Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation The Foundation will award five seed Innovation Grants of $100,000 each with the following objectives:
Deadline: 19 July 2019 Lung Cancer Research Program Applications are open for the US Department Of Defense Lung Cancer Research Program. The Concept Awards scheme provides funding up to US $100,000 in direct costs (plus indirect costs) for up to one year for projects that address at least one of the nine Areas of Emphasis. Pre-Application Deadline: 24 July 2019 Research Partnerships Program (open to WSU staff and affiliates) The Western Sydney University Research Partnerships Program supports the development of collaborative research projects jointly developed and funded with a partner organisation. Partners suitable for collaboration may be from industry, commerce, and the public and community sectors. The scheme provides awards of up to $25,000 (with a 2:1 funding ratio from the industry partner) for a period of 12 months. The funding success rate for this program is highly favourable, so all researchers with potential partners are encouraged to apply. Deadline: 26 July 2019 Cardiac and Vascular Health EMCR Seed Grants Applications are now being sought for the SPHERE Cardiac and Vascular Health CAG EMCR Seed Grants. Applications must not be currently under consideration for other seed-funding schemes offered by UNSW or SPHERE. Deadline: 31 July 2019 MRFF Frontiers in Health & Medical Research Program - EOI A second round of the MRFF Frontiers program is scheduled to open by the end of 2019. UNSW is calling on staff and affiliates to submit EOIs for the scheme. The aim is to help shape competitive applications to the next round of the Frontiers program, identify potential areas of strength and synergy across Faculties and research streams, and determine requirements for potential external partnerships. EOIs will be reviewed by a cross-Faculty panel, and highly ranked submissions will be invited to further discuss their proposal – including presenting their pitch to partners from our venture capital community – at a series of MRFF Frontiers workshops to be held in September/October 2019. EOI deadline: 2 August 2019 (5pm) National Palliative Care Projects The National Palliative Care Projects are intended to improve the quality of palliative care service delivery in Australia. The objectives of the grant opportunity are to support nationally focussed projects that target specific population groups who have recognised limited access to palliative care. Deadline: 8 August 2019 AWARDS, TRAINING AND RESOURCESUNSW-CSIRO 2020 Program Expressions of Interest (EOI) are invited from the supervisory team to participate in the 2020 UNSW-CSIRO Industry PhD program. Workshop 1: Social Media for Beginners (22 July) Workshop 2: Social Media Masterclass (23 July) Cancer Single-Cell State Atlas (CancerSEA) CancerSEA is the first dedicated database that aims to comprehensively decode distinct functional states of cancer cells at single-cell resolution. Electron Microscopy, correlative microscopy and 3D Imaging in the Life Sciences This workshop, supported by CONCERT and the Ingham Institute, will bring together leaders and researchers in Electron Microscopy (EM) for life science in the Sydney region and beyond to introduce new users to EM techniques, demonstrate different correlation techniques and present recent studies. It was formed to create an innovative and supportive environment for the translation of cancer research into improvements in patient care. CONCERT The Centre for Oncology Education, Research and Training (CONCERT) is a translational research centre program funded by the Cancer Insitute NSW. CONCERT exists to bring together the knowledge and expertise of cancer health professionals and researchers to facilitate translation of research generated evidence into practice to achieve better outcomes for those affected by cancer. Cancer CAG The Cancer Clinical Academic Group (Cancer CAG) brings together clinicians and researchers from three universities, four cancer services (with six major treatment facilities) and three Medical Research Institutes. Our combined research strength spans the translational medicine spectrum of bench to bedside and health service delivery.
