BATC Wins Major Sprinkler Mandate Victory with Supreme Court Decision!

A Victory for all Minnesota home builders and homebuyers!

Residential sprinkler systems are no longer required in any new homes! Last week we received great news from the Minnesota Supreme Court that It has chosen to deny the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry’s petition for review. Meaning, the Court of Appeals decision invalidating the sprinkler mandate in 1 and 2-family homes stands, and is now the law throughout Minnesota. Read the Supreme Court denial here.

Thank you for all your patience and support during this court battle. Our hard work has paid off.

Several media outlets covered the Supreme Court's decision. Watch and read below:

Mark Foster Joins the BATC Staff as Political Engagement Manager

BATC is pleased to welcome Mark Foster to our staff as our Political Engagement Manager. Mark’s role will be multi-faceted and includes management of the Home Builder Advocate Network, BATCs Grasstops and Grassroots Member Network; Local and Regional Policy Issues; and Housing First Fundraising and organization. Mark will be in the field actively engaging with BATC members. We know you'll make him feel welcome when he calls!

A Burlington, Iowa native, Mark earned his political science degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2012 at the age of 19. After graduation, he moved back to his hometown to work for the Greater Burlington Partnership. During his three years with the Partnership he managed a variety of programs, events and organizations including the government relations and young professionals programs. Under Mark's leadership the government relations program received the 2015 MACE Public Policy of the Year Award and the young professionals organization reached an all-time membership high. In his spare time Mark enjoys running marathons. He completed five within the past three years and is currently training for the 2016 Boston Marathon. Additionally, Mark and his fiancee, Bonnie, are engaged to be married in July.

Be Heard: Public Input Meetings Set for Mpls Sick Leave Mandates

The group tasked with coming up with a citywide sick leave proposal for Minneapolis has scheduled six "listening sessions" to gather input from members of the public. While each of the meetings are open to the public, the six meetings have targeted audiences. For BATC members, the meetings on Jan 7th and 14th are likely the best venues.

  • Jan. 7th: For those in manufacuturing and construction. Meeting will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Minneapolis Labor Center, 312 Central Avenue.
  • Jan. 14th: For small businesses. Meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bryant Lake Bowl, 810 W. Lake Street.
