Dear member
Over the past few weeks or so the weather has changed here in the Kimberley, the build-up has begun. Every morning plants along the drip line of the gutter-less corrugated roof collect the condensation stream as the rising humidity sinks down onto the cold metal roof. You know it’s humid when the frogs start their serenade at 5am. The days are hot, well over 35 degrees and the humidity will continue all day most days. Fuses are short, anticipation is high and I think we can all see the Christmas break coming at break –neck speed.
The local kids playing in the street are the best guide to daily temperatures, if they disappear before 9am then you know it’s going to be hot. This pattern will continue until the clouds balloon above the boab trees to the east, eventually cascading across the sky with thunder and lightning heralding the possibility of rain. And torrential rain it will be, filling the streets with water, ready to entice the locals kids back out again. Everything is rinsed clean, sparkling like a diamond in the sunlight. The magnificent blue of the sky is accentuated by the deep red of the pindan and glorious tropical shades of green in the Boab’s new growth. The relief is palpable, even the barking geckoes scuttling across the ceiling seem happier. This is the time of the year when bets are made by the locals, in the workplace, the pub and with friends to see who can read the signs
as to when the clouds will break. Speculation becomes a heated topic, stakes are high as this will weed out the ‘would- be’ locals from the true locals. My guess this year is for late November and time will tell if I will finally gain the status of a true local in this unique and extreme place.
I hope you can find the balance needed to navigate this final pathway through 2014 as Christmas looms closer in the calendar, bringing with it a commercial build up that is also hard to avoid. Keep your eyes open to the possibilities for change that can be found as you flick through this month’s RRR Network e-news and perhaps take a few minutes to add in your own post on the build up in your life to the RRR Facebook page as well.
Take care
