DC PANEL

G'Day USA

CEO Simon Jackman led a team of USSC experts to Washington, DC in January to meet with both Australian and American policymakers involved with Indo-Pacific policy. Professor Jackman joined Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne, former US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, Professor Stephen Smith and Dr Kathleen Hicks on stage for an open session on how the United States and Australia can work together to keep the region free and open.

G'Day USA is Australia's premier public and economic diplomacy program promoting Australian capabilities in the United States.

NEW BRIEF

The committee is now in session

In a new research brief, Visiting Fellow Bruce Wolpe charts the key House of Representative committee leadership changes after the Democrats' success at the midterm elections.

He also looks at the new challenges that committee oversight and investigations will present the Trump administration, and where Australia should be watching for impacts on US foreign policy and trade.

You can read the full brief here.

NEW PODCAST

2020Vision Podcast launched

The USSC now has a weekly podcast following the twists and turns in the 2020 US presidential election. Leading experts, scholars and journalists join the podcast each week to discuss the issues that are shaping the campaign. In the first six episodes, 2020Vision has explored the longest government shutdown in US history, the Democrat's so-called "unlikeable women", voter suppression, the transgender military ban and how veteran status translates for female presidential candidates.

Throughout the year, the podcast will continue to take a deep dive into all the hot-button topics going into one of the most consequential US presidential elections. So make sure to subscribe on Spotify, iTunes or wherever you listen to your podcasts.

EVENTS

The second summit: Trump, Kim and US engagement in Northeast Asia

US President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un are making preparations for another summit at the end of this month. The success or failure of such a meeting, however, depends on more than just these two heads of state. Focusing too closely on the spectacle of another Trump-Kim summit also obscures larger questions about the prospects for successful denuclearisation, America’s role on the Korean Peninsula and, more broadly, American engagement in Northeast Asia.

To discuss these issues, please join Dr Charles Edel, Senior Fellow at the United States Studies Centre, for a conversation featuring Dr Van Jackson, Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Victoria University of Wellington and Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; John Delury, Associate Professor of Chinese Studies at Yonsei University (Seoul); and Dr Sheryn Lee, Lecturer in Security Studies at Macquarie University.
