Stat Of The WeekIn American Samoa, 71% of Terrestrial Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are covered by protected areas in average in 2021. This is one of the highest rate reported in the Pacific. KBAs are the most important places in the world for species and their habitats. This why we must protect these areas, essential for life. More info Did you know? In the region, French is spoken in 4 Pacific Island Countries and Territories: French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and Wallis & Futuna. 20th March is French Language Day. French is spoken by more than 300 million people. (Source: Organisation internationale de la francophonie) More info In Vanuatu, 24% of total imports were fuel imports in 2019. Fuel imports cost the Pacific region US$6 billion annually, or around 5 to 15% of GDP for each economy. This is an enormous economic burden. With its vast natural resources, a history and culture of independence and subsistence together with its low energy intensity, the Pacific subregion offers great advantages for energy transition leadership.
