May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health is essential to our overall health, and the importance of attending to mental health has become even more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has not only negatively impacted people’s mental health but has also created barriers for support and treatment.
Oakland Promise and our Advising Team is here to support you. Throughout the month of May we will be hosting events like our Fireside Chat and helping you connect to mental health resources for managing stress and anxiety and resources to find the mental health professionals that's right for you.

Mentor-Scholar Activity #6
Reminder to complete the final required Mentor-Scholar activity you received via email on 4/2. In this activity, you and your Mentor will reflect on your experience working together over the past year in the OP Mentor Program.
This activity includes 4 Parts:
- Pre-work (Article ~ 15 min)
- Main Activity (Reflections Discussion ~ 60 min)
- Personal Reflection Project (30 min)
- Feedback Form (5 min).
The Personal Reflections Activity and Feedback Form are due by June 30th, at 11:59 pm. If you have any questions, please email advising@oaklandpromise.org.
Fireside Chat with a Mental Health Professional
Join us for our Mental Health Awareness Month kickoff event - Fireside Chat with a Mental Health Professional from 4-5pm on Tuesday, May 4th! We will be providing a space to discuss the effects of the pandemic on your mental health and how to navigate and combat stress, anxiety, and loneliness. This will be a candid conversation where you will get the chance to ask YOUR questions to a Mental Health Professional from our partner, Family Education Resource Center (FERC)!
All attendees will be also be provided with FREE exclusive online (video, phone, and/or messaging) counseling through BetterHelp, the world’s largest therapy provider.
CREWS Leadership Program Application Now Open!
The CREWS Program is currently recruiting for the 2021-22 cohort of CREWS Leaders! We are excited to expand this opportunity to our continuing Scholars. As a CREWS Leader, Scholars will have the opportunity to expand on their professional development skills while also serving their awesome Oakland community! CREWS Leaders will build the College Completion team’s capacity by participating in First-Year Program planning and much more.
To apply, applicants must:
- Be a 2020, 2019, or 2018 OP Scholar intended to enroll for the 2021-22 academic year
- Maintain a 3.0 cumulative & term GPA
- Complete an application (which includes a resume, a cover letter, and two (2) recommendations)

Are you a Junior or Senior want to take steps towards your career exploration? Please sign up for the Advising Teams first ever Mock Interview week happening through the week of June 28th-July 2nd. We will be supporting scholars with their Resumes and Cover Letters throughout May in preparation for the Mock Interview. If you are interested, please complete the interest form below.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
APA Heritage Month is celebrated in May to commemorate the achievements and contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the United States. The past year has reminded us of the strength of the API community and our collective power in the face of white supremacy, racism, discrimination, and violence. In honor API Heritage Month, we focus on this strength and power and highlight the diversity and joy of API experiences beyond our individual and collective struggles.
To celebrate we are watching Asian Americans: a PBS documentary that explores the 150 year history of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United States.
