US FDA Panel Recommends Limits on Testosterone Use
Testosterone use should be restricted, according to recommendations made by an advisory panel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The panel convened on September 17th to discuss the increased use of testosterone in the United States. According to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the number of testosterone prescriptions rose by 1 million between 2010 and 2013.
The FDA has approved the use of testosterone to treat "classic" hypogonadism due to problems in the testes or brain.
However, some physicians are prescribing testosterone for age-related hypogonadism. The panel noted that the benefits of testosterone are unclear in this population and that more research is necessary.
The panel also called for further investigation on possible testosterone-related cardiovascular problems.
Panel members voted 20-1 in favor of the recommendation, but reaction from other professionals in the field has been mixed. Please click here to learn more.
