Greg's Message

Hello Parents and Friends of St. Anne’s
Last Friday’s twilight sports were a great success. I’d like to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of staff, led by Josh Cassell; their contribution ensured an enjoyable evening. Many thanks also to the parents who supported the participants, especially those who assisted on the night: transporting equipment, cooking sausages etc. The stars of the show were the students - well done to all of you on your determination, skill, teamwork and cooperation. In summary, this was a terrific community event; one where the Spirit of St Anne’s shone through again. Good luck to our Year 3 Reconciliation candidates, as they continue their preparation to receive this sacrament on March 27th. Next week from Tuesday afternoon until Friday I’ll be on a Principals conference; Clare Bellio will be Acting Principal.

SACRAMENTS 2019

Year 3 Reconciliation -   Wed 27th March, 7:30pm

Year 3: First Eucharist -  Sat May 25th, 5pm;
                                       Sun May 26th, 10:30am
          First Eucharist -    Sat June 1st, 5pm
                                       Sun June 2nd,10:30am

Year 6: Confirmation -    Sat August 17th, 5pm.

Thank you to all the year 3/4 parents and students who attended the Commitment Masses last weekend. It was good to see the support that was given to these days by the families of both the school and out of parish schools. The atmosphere at the morning tea after the 10.30 mass was quite electric. Thank you to the band of helpers that helped to coordinate and run the morning. It was a great success.

As mentioned at our Faith Night for Reconciliation, the message that comes across loud and clear is that you, the parents, are the first and foremost educators in faith of your child. We, the catholic school, can only build upon what your child has been previously taught. This is why it is important to attend the faith nights that are presented for you for whatever Sacrament your child will be receiving. These nights are to inform you both on a spiritual level as well as a practical one.

Children receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be doing so on the 27th March at 7.30 pm at St Anne’s Church. Children can wear neat coloured clothes on this night and be seated with their parents.
The Sacrament will be concelebrated by Fathers John and Toan and another priest.

Thank you to the Faith and Social Justice team-Nathan, Lucinda and Jessica who spoke so well about the work that Caritas does for the underprivileged. We seek your support with this venture that is held every year, in every catholic school and every parish. This is strongly encouraged and supported by the Archdiocese of Melbourne. Remember, every little bit helps, so send along a gold coin or two to help those less privileged than ourselves.
These three captains  together with the other school captains, also attended the St Patrick’s Day mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral last Friday.
I look forward to working with this enthusiastic and spirit-filled team.

On Friday the 5th April it will be an Anointing Mass at 10.00 am at St Anne’s. The 5/6 leaders will be helping to serve morning tea after mass. They will need your support to help send along a small plate to share. Thanking you in advance.

Student Wellbeing

Rolling with the emotional rollercoaster

It is most healthy to experience the full range of emotions. While feeling good involves living a life with frequent positive emotions, feeling good also involves giving oneself the permission to experience negative emotions without trying to deny or suppress them. The foundation of a happy life is not one with only positive emotions – it is one where we accept our full range of emotions and allow them to flow through us, without getting too attached (Ciarrochi et al 2013).
While there are many theorists who have developed different lists of emotions, Robert Plutchik's theory (1997) gives us a simple overview, explaining that the eight basic emotions are:

  • Fear → feeling afraid, frightened, scared
  • Anger → feeling angry, rage
  • Sadness → feeling sad, sorrow, grief
  • Joy → feeling happy, happiness, gladness
  • Disgust → feeling something is wrong or nasty
  • Surprise → being unprepared for something
  • Trust → admiration is stronger; acceptance is weaker
  • Anticipation → in the sense of looking forward positively to something which is going to happen.

Most of us would perceive some of the emotions as good/positive (trust, joy, anticipation) or bad/negative (anger, fear, disgust), although it may be more helpful to think of emotions as pleasant or unpleasant. Our emotions are sign posts to what we need to act on. They can serve and empower us to explore the world safely and make meaning of our experiences. Each emotion has its purpose. We can gently listen to our emotions to teach us more about where we need to heal and grow.

Parents and Friends Association

It is great to see everyone getting behind the Cadbury Easter Egg Fundraiser! All boxes have been allocated, many have already been sold and once everyone has sold their boxes, we will have raised approximately $2,700! Completing the sales is really important, as these funds help underwrite the P & F initiatives that will be taking place over the balance of 2019, such as the Mother’s Day Stall, Grandparents Day and School Disco. It also means we can pump all our accumulated savings into the project to resurface the Lower playground courts. Keep selling, everyone!

The P& F BBQ stall at the Twilight Sports was again a great success, raising approximately $700. A great team of volunteers was co-ordinated by Kathleen Sexton, who did much planning ahead of this event. Our thanks go to Syl Longo for transporting equipment to and from the grounds and getting things set up, the Taouk family for the use of their super-size eskies, Sue Wuttke, Didi Muccio, Susan Whyte, Nadia Odorico, Anne- Marie Moir & Kathleen Sexton who made honey joys, chocolate crackles and cupcakes,  Marissa Dunell, Al Dunne, Tiff Garonzi, Nadia Ordoric, Sam Lovrich, Peter Hurley, Mel Graetz, Louise Gee, Lisa Hodgkinson, Sophie Moore, Tony Taouk, James Gleddin, Anne-Marie Moir, Joanne Giarracca, Gerti Moar, Bianca Pezzano, Julian Mazzacca, Sunny Mellor,  Kim Gleeson, Rebecca Ellis-Jurkovic, Jennifer Noonan, Kathleen Sexton and Richard Clancy who signed up and worked on the BBQ and Stall and assisted with set-up and clean-up. The BBQ stall enhanced what was a really enjoyable evening and it was wonderful seeing the kids and teaching staff participating so enthusiastically with the support of all the parents, siblings, grandparents, past-pupils and friends who attended. Well done St Anne’s community!
