Structuring your Thesis: From design to writing Designed to build on the paper writing skills developed through Ron Smernik’s Writing Groups, this workshop focuses on effective options for structuring a thesis in fields relevant to Agriculture, Food and Wine students. We will analyse recent successful examples, with a focus on strategies for creating a coherent ‘whole story’ out of often disparate pieces. Participants will have opportunities to apply the strategies discussed to their own situation, so the workshop is ideal for students past the half-way point in candidature. Communication and 'win-win' skills as an HDR In this workshop, Jane Turner-Goldsmith looks at the skills of communication – speaking, writing, emailing, presenting and listening (the last a much under-valued communication skill!). You will also learn an effective assertive communication technique and discuss the basics of conflict resolution and negotiation while considering leadership and collaboration roles that apply to you as a researcher and in your future workplace. 23 August 2019, 10:30am - 12:30pm, North Terrace. Working with your Supervisor - Faculty of Arts The relationship you have with your supervisor is crucial in determining your PhD experience. They are your primary source of guidance as you undertake an individual research project and even the best student/supervisor relationships can experience periods of strain through the ups and downs of research. Demystifying Research Metrics - Lecture Presented by University Library staff, this lecture examines the nature of bibliometrics and altmetrics measurements, and why they are important for researchers. NewsCareer Control for Researchers - Open for expressions of interest The next Career Control for Researchers program is now open for Expressions of Interest from HDR students. Career Control for Researchers is an 8 week online program designed to give HDR students the tools, guidance and confidence to take charge of their career direction, determine their own priorities and accelerate their progress. The program will run from 9 September 2019 - 1 November 2019. For more information and to register your interest in the program, visit the Career Control for Researchers webpage. Expressions of interest will be accepted until 20 August 2019. This program counts for 13 credits in Domain B. The Industry Engaged PhD (IEP) Program and Scholarship IEP scholarships are now available to support eligible domestic and international students who undertake an industry placement. The University of Adelaide’s Industry Engaged PhD (IEP) program involves participation in an industry placement of 1-3 months (FTE) in duration, together with the completion of a number of Career and Research Skills Training (CaRST) and other professional development activities. Completion of the IEP, including the compulsory CaRST credit courses, will be reflected as a statement on the academic transcript. The University of Adelaide has partnered with APR.Intern to expand the range of placement opportunities available to our PhD students. At this time, there are 16 exciting opportunities available for SA.
