'Singin’ in the Rain' at the Symphony is Mar 14

The Pittsburgh Symphony is hosting Sacred Heart School families for the performance of the musical “Singin' in the Rain” at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. Honor Band students and children in the “Making Music with Sound” program will be performing in the Grand Lobby before "Singin' in the Rain."

Tickets can be purchased online: www.pittsburghsymphony.org/sacredheart. Pick your own seat and join Sacred Heart families, (children $15; adults $20) in the Gallery Center section.

Saturday, March 14, is also the day of the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Pittsburgh. Parking and traffic will be a challenge. To help alleviate this problem, Sacred Heart School has reserved two buses to leave Sacred Heart at noon with pick-up at Heinz Hall at 4:30 p.m. The charge is $3 per person. Please call the school office to reserve a place on the bus.

We hope to see your smiling face at Heinz Hall for what promises to be an uplifting musical experience.

Sarris Easter Candy pick-up is March 18

Thank you to everyone who supported this year’s SHES Annual Sarris Easter Candy Sale.

If you have any questions or would like to help with candy distribution, please email Danielle Cessna at mainierodj@hotmail.com.

International Connections Bowling and Potluck

The Bowling and Potluck Social hosted by International Connections was a hit!

About 60 people attended. The potluck was a great success with delicious food from around the world. Everyone enjoyed competing in an international quiz while they ate. Families worked together to answer questions like "What is the smallest country in the world?"

Kids had a great time bowling.  Thanks to the older kids for helping out with the pin setting in the back.

It was a wonderful time. Hope to see everyone again at the next event this spring!

The Pastor’s Prize for Penmanship

One of the hallmarks of Catholic School education, after the study of the Catholic Faith, was the practice of cursive writing. For a variety of reasons, the use of cursive writing is diminishing.

In order to encourage the use of cursive writing by children of Sacred Heart Elementary School, Fr. Grecco will award a monetary prize to a child in each of the classrooms in grades 2,3 7,8.

Students who wish to participate will provide a sample of their handwriting (grades 2 and 3, The Sign of the Cross; grade 7, the Hail Mary; grade 8, The “Lord’s Prayer”). The selection will be written out and the top three samples in each class will be selected by the teacher for judging by Fr. Grecco.

Samples provided to Fr. Grecco will not be identified with names. The teacher alone will know the identity of those whose work is submitted for judging.

Prizes will be given as follows: Grades 2 and 3, $10; Grade 7 and 8, $20.

Parent-teacher conferences are March 26

Optional Parent-Teacher Conferences are being scheduled for Thursday, March 26 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. A sign-up form is in the monthly envelope and should be returned by March 11.

Lenten fasting and abstinence

Fr. Grecco reminds us of the following guidelines concerning Lenten fasting and abstinence.

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. (All Fridays of the year are days of penance in some form).

2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14.The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly.

3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.

4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.

5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law.

6. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.

Junior Achievement students visit classrooms

Sacred Heart School welcomes the Duquesne University students who teach the Junior Achievement USA program, Our Community to children in the primary grades.

Hands-on classroom activities introduce students to social studies learning objectives. Topics include careers, product production, innovation, earning, taxes, government, money, business and decisionmaking. The School of  Education at Duquesne University, Junior Achievement, and Sacred Heart School have benefited from this partnership for the past seven years.

March food: Instant mashed potatoes

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect instant mashed potatoes to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Student Council members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
