Be Bold, Be Brave, Be You! Nominate a BatonbearerNominations are now open for local representatives to carry the Queen’s Baton in Cairns in the lead-up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Queen's Baton will arrive in Cairns on 15 March 2018 and will stay in the region for three days. Across Australia, approximately 3800 batonbearers are needed to share the dream of the ‘Friendly Games’ as part of the QBR. Batonbearers are people of all abilities who inspire others to be great. Batonbearers will represent a community with pride and showcase to the world the region’s natural beauty and vibrant community. Nominations can be made at gc2018.com/qbr. Cairns Women of the YearA passion for helping others while busting gender stereotypes has earned Kate Fern the title of Cairns Region Woman of the Year. Ms Fern is the driving force behind The Power of Pallets – a program that upcycles unwanted wooden pallets into items that are sold to raise funds for the FNQ Hospital Foundation. She has also established programs to help long-term employed people enter the workforce. Young Woman of the Year Carla Schesser was recognised for her achievements in helping other young people to succeed in life. Read more about their achievements. Have your say on CBD lane changesConsultation has been extended until 7 April on a proposal to change linemarking on parts of Grafton Street and Lake Street. The changes would include reconfiguring the street to create one traffic lane in each direction, dedicated bicycle lanes and improved vision for motorists exiting centre parking. The first of eight market events for the year will be held on Sunday 2 April from 8am to 2pm. Stallholder applications can be submitted online. A reminder that Williams Esplanade is closed between Harpa St and Cedar Rd from 6am to 4pm on market days. Designated passenger drop-off and pick-up points are located at both ends of Williams Esplanade and Sunbus operates from an alternative bus zone on Harpa Street. Additional free car parking is available on Triton Street. The Palm Cove Markets will feature arts and crafts, wellness products and services, produce and food stalls as well as free kids activities. Get your work colleagues, school or community group together to start planning your float for this Cairns' biggest annual community celebration. Join the Cairns Festival Making PlaceThe Making Place will be a key feature of Cairns Festival 2017, hosting an eclectic mix of entertainment and activities. A dedicated space on the Esplanade, visitors will find musicians, performers, multicultural activities, artists and a host of interactive workshops. Anyone who would like to share their skills and talents as part of The Making Place can apply now online. The Making Place will operate from Monday 28 August until Friday 1 September on the Western Events Lawn, near the Esplanade lagoon, and will incorporate the Festival Main Stage. Anzac Day eventsAnzac Day services will be held in Cairns, Babinda, Edmonton, Gordonvale, Stratford, Trinity Beach and Yorkeys Knob. The Cairns City Dawn Service will be at the Esplanade Cenotaph at 5.30am. It will be followed by an Ecumenical Church Service, Parade and Commemorative Service at Munro Martin Parklands.
