Having Sex is Good for Your Overall Health

Many of us are trying to maintain healthy habits these days. But did you know that having sex has health benefits?

Studies have shown that sex can burn calories, relieve stress, and boost your self-esteem. It might also help you sleep better, and it could be good for your heart, too.

We explain these benefits and more in our latest blog post. Click here for more details!

Most Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancers Have Satisfying Sex Lives: Study

Sometimes, childhood cancers and their treatment can lead to sexual problems when patients reach adulthood. But in a new survey of adult survivors, most reported satisfaction with their sex lives.

The survey results were published in Cancer, the journal of the American Cancer Society.

Some of the participants had had neurotoxic treatments, which can affect the nervous system. This subgroup was less likely to have reached "psychosexual milestones" like having intercourse, being in a steady relationship, and having children. However, this did not necessarily affect their sexual satisfaction.

What else did the researchers discover? Find out here.

Drugs for Enlarged Prostate May Affect Men's Mental Health

Men who take 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (5ARIs) might be at higher risk for depression and self-harm, according to a recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine.

These drugs, such as finasteride and dutasteride, are often prescribed to treat hair loss and benign prostatic hyperplasia - an enlarged prostate.

Using ten years of information from medical databases, the researchers identified two groups of men over age 66.  Each group included over 90,000 men. One group took 5ARIs at some point. The other group did not.

The men who took the drugs were at higher risk for self-harm and depression during the first 18 months of treatment, the study reported. However, they were not at higher risk for suicide.

While the study showed increased risk for self-harm and depression, the authors noted that the overall risk is low and that the benefits of 5ARIs "likely" outweigh the risks.
