Ashtekar Frontiers of Science Lectures to begin Jan. 23

Each of this year’s lectures will link to one of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals. This year, the lecture series will be held live via Zoom Video Webinar on six consecutive Saturday mornings (11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.) from January 23 through February 27, 2021. So many of us are happy to see 2020 in the rearview mirror, but the pandemic is still ever present. I propose to you a somewhat trite New Year’s resolution: “I will take care of my total health and well-being this year, regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Q&A with Derek Lee: Could spotted owls benefit from forest fires?
According to Penn State biologist Derek Lee, forest fires are actually beneficial to the threatened species of spotted owls. His results have important implications for management of forests inhabited by spotted owls, which assumes that fire is a major threat to the owls.
