Click here Know Injury eNews August 2019Injury-related deaths in Australia in 2017The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) recently released a web report regarding deaths, causes of death and life expectancy in Australia in 2017. The report highlights the heightened prevalence of injury as a leading cause of death among individuals aged under 45. In particular suicide, land transport accidents and accidental poisoning were the top three causes of death to individuals aged 15 – 44. Injury Prevention Workforce PaperThe Health Promotion Journal of Australia recently published the injury workforce in Western Australia: Findings from a cross‐sectional survey. The research provides an overview and sought to review the scope of the injury prevention and safety promotion workforce in WA to gain a greater understanding of sector characteristics, work and needs. Youth Transport: Preventing Road Crashes and Injuries Among Young Drivers seminar recordingPreventing road crashes and injuries among young drivers focuses on youth injury being a serious public health issue in Western Australia. Research shows us that the incidence of road crashes and impact of injury can be reduced by applying certain strategies and injury prevention techniques. Learn how to reduce harm and injuries among young people from road crashes. Watch presentations by Dr Michelle Hobday, Peter Palamara, Rose Power and Christine Smith present on the issues leading to injuries among young drivers. Know Injury ToolkitsKnow Injury has developed media toolkits to support Local Governments, community organisations and regional services to participate in injury prevention and community safety campaigns. Get involved in an injury prevention or safety promotion campaign and promote the cause to your community by running activities, events or getting active on social media. Injury Prevention Network Meeting: July Wrap-UpOn Friday the 19th of July, the Injury Prevention Network held their quarterly meeting to connect with members to share learnings and solutions in injury prevention, community safety and recovery. The focus for the meeting was Homelessness and Injury. Guest speaker Shannen Vallesi provided an overview of the Royal Perth Hospital Homelessness Team and some key highlights of their program from their first two and a half years of operation. While Dr Trudi Cooper (ECU) shared information on the ‘Policy and Support Needs of Independent Homeless Young People 12-15 Years: Young People’s Voices’ report which she recently prepared for the Commissioner for Children and Young People, Western Australia. Local Government Community Safety Network Annual ConferenceThis event provides an opportunity to discuss, share and workshop current issues in community safety and crime prevention in local government. Open to anyone working in or interested in community safety, injury prevention, community development and support, youth development, rangers, place-making, social work, not-for-profit, community and government sectors. Expert speakers include representatives from the WA Police, Peel Mental Health, Shelter WA, Crimestoppers, the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, NBN Co, WALGA and the Cities of Melville, Joondalup, Wanneroo and Perth. The event will cover current WA Police initiatives including Crimestoppers and the Counter Violent Extremism Intervention, the role of local government in addressing homelessness, suicide prevention, community safety services and online safety and scams. Grass Roots Falls FestivalThe festival provides an opportunity for health professionals and other staff across all settings, managers, educators, policy makers, and others with an interest in reducing the risk of falling among older people to enjoy sharing the latest ideas and innovative approaches in practice, research and falls prevention at the GrassRoots level. The festival focus is to support the broad falls prevention community to access current research, practice innovations, cutting edge work in falls prevention and management and other exciting GrassRoots falls prevention initiatives that are happening in Australia and overseas. The program will feature presentations from across the residential aged care, hospital and community settings. The Grass Roots Falls Festival will be held on 19 & 20 September 2019 in Fremantle. 14th Australasian Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion ConferenceThe Australian Injury Prevention Network (AIPN) will be hosting the 14th Australasian Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Conference in Brisbane from 25-27 November 2019. With a theme of Pushing the Boundaries, this conference will challenge the traditional injury prevention paradigms to examine future disruptions and opportunities for injury prevention.Western Australia Rural and Remote Mental Health Conference 2019Taking place in Albany, WA, 16 Oct - 18 October 2019, the biennial Western Australia (WA) Rural and Remote Mental Health Conference 2019 will be hosted by the WA Country Health Service (WACHS). The focus of the conference will be to address the vital issues of trauma, recovery, and youth suicide prevention, as well as a range of broader issues relevant to all those working, or caring for, country people. Act Belong Commit - Active August Campaign Active August is dedicated to keeping active for your mental health and wellbeing in as many ways as you can - physically, mentally socially and spiritually. There is substantial evidence that people with higher levels of activity have a greater sense of wellbeing and mental health. After all, these are the basic building blocks for good mental health. Imagine Zero – A Safe System saves lives The Road Safety Council of Western Australia is leading the development of a new draft road safety strategy for our State. The Council will present this draft strategy to the Minister for Road Safety for consideration. Consultations are now open. Your views will contribute to the development of the new road safety strategy. 2030 Vision for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.
