Western's QES Projects Build Lasting Bridges

Western recently concluded two Queen Elizabeth Scholars (QES) projects — a program that strengthened global partnerships and expanded community-engaged research opportunities.

Through QES, Western welcomed international scholars to campus to collaborate with faculty and community partners on applied research, while also supporting Western students in gaining hands-on experience abroad. These reciprocal exchanges deepened institutional relationships and created a strong foundation for ongoing collaboration.

“Programs like QES build lasting bridges — not as isolated initiatives, but as enduring alliances between institutions.” - Gerardo Pérez Martínez, QEScholar (pictured above, second from the left)

“My journey with Western began through ELAP as a visiting undergraduate researcher in chemistry. After a transformative experience in 2024, I returned in 2025 as a direct-entry PhD student, excited to continue working with the same incredible supervisor.” - Lucas Ferreira Marques dos Santos, PhD candidate, inorganic chemistry

Winter International Student Orientation Success

This January, we welcomed a new group of international and exchange students during our month-long International Student Orientation.

Our hybrid model featured a Welcome Centre, virtual information sessions and in-person events designed to help students connect and build community.

Plans are underway for our May International Student Orientation, which begins with the Welcome Centre opening on April 30. Campus partners interested in attending any of our programming are encouraged to contact our team at iss@uwo.ca.

Keyona Gallucci: Five Things About Me

  1. I’m an International Learning Coordinator, connecting Western students with global opportunities. I also oversee the International Learning Ambassadors, students who’ve studied abroad and now volunteer to share their experiences with peers.
  2. I participated in three Western International programs during my undergrad at Western: a faculty-led trip to Rwanda, an internship in Rwanda, and another faculty-led research trip across China.
  3. I lived abroad in Tanzania for four years; first in Mwanza, then in Kilimanjaro (yes, home to Africa’s tallest mountain!).
  4. I can drive manual vehicles with both right- and left-hand steering, and that includes not just cars but also boats and even tractors.
  5. I used to be a competitive bowler. I had custom bowling shoes and my name engraved in bowling balls.. I even made it to nationals!
