TERM 3 WEEK 9   SEPTEMBER 12, 2018
OUR LADY OF GRACE NEWSLETTER

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents

School Community Survey
For growth and improvement feedback is essential. Most staff and all students have now completed surveys which will provide OLG with anonymous, confidential and valued insights that will be used to guide the development of the school.

What is now needed is input from parents. Successful education of your children comes about through a partnership between school/teacher and family. Without your feedback we are left guessing as to what we should do to improve from the perspective of parents.

So far, of 300+ families, we have had 30 responses!! Please make the most of the opportunity.

Tournament of Minds
One of the slogans for Tournament of Minds is “It’s the journey that matters”. Regardless of whether a team wins through to be the international champions or their year’s journey ends at the Regional Finals, it is a trip worth making.

Last weekend OLG’s Social Science team, under the guidance of Mrs Meyers, earned Honours at the State Finals, meaning they came second. They did a great job and have much to be proud of. Well done to: names of members. I know you will have learnt a lot about teamwork, focus, persistence, time management and the value of sticking to your plan, and I hope you give it another go next year.

Our Arts team are now the inaugural state winners in this new singing, dancing and generally arty discipline. Team members: names of members facilitated by Mrs Elliott, now go into preparation for the International Finals, held in October in Darwin.

Of note were the high number of former OLG students who were members of Sacred Heart TOM teams at the State Finals. SHC is a proud supporter of TOM, with the presentations being made in their Performing Arts building and principal, Peter Bothe, generally attending the Regional and State performances. I also told that OLG TOM participants are highly regarded by SHC.

Frogs Rock
In the best tradition of Australian ‘cover bands’ the Rock Frogs are slowly building a following. They have now performed to adoring fans at One Big Voice Perth Arena and the Catholic Education Performing Arts Festival at Perth Concert Hall. Next Wednesday they have a gig at Hyde Park Hotel.

You are probably well aware that half of the group is comprised of brothers Dion and Luca Calcei.
Is this another INXS in the making? Get your autographs now before they become super stars!

Sacramental Retreats
This week Sister Joseph has been directing Reconciliation Retreats with our Year Three students. Not only does she provide this service to OLG but also to St Dominic’s, Innaloo and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Karrinyup.

Without exception, both the teachers and children who have participated in Sr Joseph’s retreats comment that they are a marvellous experience and well worth being part of.

The occasion of First Reconciliation will be celebrated for our Year Three students at 6.00pm on Wednesday 16 October in our church.

Building Developments
Next three weeks (mostly during the holidays):

·         The old staff room (we have moved upstairs) will be stripped out in preparation for this becoming the teaching resources store room. It will be accessed via a doorway in the back corner of the library.

·         Off the east side of the EMU room is a storeroom. It sits above the east end of the old music room. This will be dismantled to allow extension of the truss that will support the roof over this area. There will be no ground level changes in this area for the time being – the hall space will remain as is.

·         Work on the Administration building will largely be completed, to the extent that we will be able to re-occupy it – as long as the carpet colour choices can be agreed on!

·         The range of rooms, of which the temporary Admin is a part, will be partially demolished.

·         The staff room is now in the rooms that were once Year 6 – above the canteen and accessed by the stairs near the Admin building.

·         The program is still focused on the hall being available to the school by 7th December to accommodate the Presentation Assembly and Graduation Dance.

God bless
Chris Kenworthy, Principal

Grandparents Day
A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped out and sent food in to help make Grandparents’ Day so successful.

It is one of my favourite days of the year and it is so lovely to see all the happy, smiling Grandparents’ taking such an interest in their Grandchildren.

A special Thank you to Nerida Hince and Ilona Davies for helping set up on Thursday and to all the Mums who helped out in the morning to make it all run so smoothly, much appreciated.

Diana Guttridge

The P&F would also like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to Di Guttridge for organising (yet again!) such a wonderfully successful and thoroughly enjoyable event – thanks so much Di – we really appreciate all of your hard work!!!!

The Fathering Project Launch
We successfully launched “The Fathering Project” last Wednesday night. It was fantastic to have so many Dads come along and show their interest in getting involved with this valuable initiative. Paul Valentino, The Fathering Project WA School’s Manager, provided support to set up our own Dad’s Group at OLG. If you missed the launch and would like to know more, please contact Damien Newbold on 0417 906 502 or email the P & F exec@olgpf.com.

Your sponsorship will help fund many projects around the school which directly impacts our children’s school experience, and more information will follow next term as we progress this beneficial project.

To find out more and register your interest email OLGBIZCOM@cewa.edu.au or drop your business card in the office.

Have a great week everyone!!!

2018 MARIST CRICKET CARNIVAL
Newman College is honoured to be the host of the 2018 Australian Marist Cricket Carnival.  The Carnival will run from Tuesday, 4 December through to Tuesday, 11 December 2018.  Five Marist Schools from Australia will compete and 65 competitors will take part.

Tournaments such as the Marist Cricket Carnival can only be held because of the generosity of those families who billet visiting athletes and we thank those families who have already offered their support.  The financial implications of accommodating athletes in hotel/motel type accommodation would soon put an end to such competitions as for many families the cost of the trip would then be beyond their means.

We ask that the Newman Community rally and assist in accommodating visiting athletes as we endeavour to make this Carnival a success.  Having children on the 7 – 12 Campus is certainly not a pre-requisite for billeting athletes.  We would be delighted to accept an offer to billet from families with children on our K – 2 and 3 – 6 Campuses.

The responsibilities of the billet family include providing the athletes with meals, a bed, laundry facilities and ensuring that the athletes meet all the Carnival requirements. Billeting athletes is a wonderful and rewarding experience for both the athlete and the host family.  Perhaps one day your child may be fortunate enough to be selected to represent Newman College at a Marist Sporting Carnival and require the generosity of a Marist Family during their interstate stay!

If you are able to assist in providing a visiting athlete with accommodation during the Cricket Carnival please phone me on 9204 9444 between the hours of 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday.  I look forward to hearing from you and am very happy to answer any questions you may have with regard to the Billeting Programme.  An advertising flyer with an offer to billet form is attached for your convenience.
