However, from a connectivity perspective, opportunities emerged, largely from new ways of working as organisations adapted to home-working and home learning. As a result, better, more reliable connectivity is now top of the agenda in terms of digital progress across the UK. That aside, for 2021 our team at the Scotland 5G Centre is focussing on making a lasting impact on the development of an effective 5G eco-system across Scotland. In fact we’ve already begun. In September we launched our S5GConnect programme (more info here), the creation of a network of regional hubs. The first is confirmed for Alloa in Clackmannanshire, and at least two more will be announced by summer. The S5GConnect Hubs will develop skills, accelerate digital connectivity and bolster regional economic growth. With facilities spanning the length and breadth of the country, Hub teams will assist organisations of all sizes to unlock 5G’s full potential and, crucially, to develop use cases into commercial opportunities. The Hubs will also support the post-pandemic recovery and address the digital gap that has been highlighted as key to ensuring Scotland’s business, health care and education sectors can thrive in the new economic environment. Our three founding projects continue to gather pace and ensure we are making real progress to roll out 5G deployment in Scotland. These are: These pivotal projects will further enhance our understanding of the 5G ecosystem and the positive impact it will have for the Scottish economy. And so we have high hopes for brighter horizons.
