Video Notes from Our International Students (With Correct Link)

Last week, we posted the following paragraph with an incorrect link. We apologize for the error. The link has been corrected.

In September, we opened our doors to our new and returning students from China, Canada, Ethiopia, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Turkey, and Viet Nam. Fortunately, some students were able to return to Seattle, but most of our international students had to stay home due to U.S. government travel restrictions and an uptick of COVID-19 cases. Those students are studying remotely from their home countries. Some of our international students created a video and described their experiences, which was presented at Community Meeting last week.

Digital Dance Share, Nov. 12

On Nov. 12, 7:00-8:00 pm, the Northwest School Dance Department invites all families to our Digital Dance Share to view some of the work our dancers have created this fall.

The Dance Department holds the intention of facilitating continuity, community, and connection for ourselves and for our students through regular dance practice. We believe, as does the Performing Arts Department, that it is imperative to include dance as a creative learning tool to help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Learning and creating choreography not only releases endorphins but provides the flexibility of mind, body, and spirit; naturally strengthening and increasing our capacity for human awareness and understanding. While modifying our lessons to an online format this year, we feel that this work is fundamental to help students build and maintain a positive connection with, to, and for one another, and for the world in which we live.

Virtual Holiday on the Hill Starts Nov 13

Join the entire Northwest School community for a family-friendly, virtual event that supports the library Nov. 13-20. Visit Elliott Bay Book Company, where 10 percent of book purchases support our library. We'll share a code that can be used while perusing and purchasing books on the bookstore’s website (or in person, if you so choose). We’ll also have the librarians’ wish list of books for purchase and donation. More to come! Contact Julie Lombardo for more information.

Yearbook Portrait/Class Photos

Your student may have noticed that the Picture Upload course's "Upload Your Yearbook Photo" assignment on their Canvas calendar is due soon.

Many students have already submitted their photos for the yearbook, but we still need a few more. If your student hasn't yet submitted a photo, please have them upload a portrait photo to appear in the yearbook by Nov. 15. If your student chooses to have a professional photo taken later, or if we are able to have photos taken by Yuen Lui, we can swap out photos later.

Students can check the assignment and see if they have already submitted their yearbook photo. Please note: The yearbook photo is not the same as the Padlet wall photo. Please contact Nathalie Hall with any questions.

6th-9th Grade Student/Parent/Guardian/Advisor Conference Info

The 6th-9th Grade Student/Parent/Guardian/Advisor conferences are on the horizon! A survey will be emailed to all families of 6th-9th grade students on Friday, Nov. 13. Please complete this survey as soon as possible to book the time for your Student/ Parent/Guardian/Advisor conference.

Families of students in 10th-12th grade who wish to meet with their student's advisor should contact the advisor directly to schedule a conference time.

Snoqualmie Valley Day Hike, Nov. 21

Join us for a day hike along the Snoqualmie Valley Trail near Carnation. This beautiful hike will include walking along the Cottonwood Loop in Tolt-MacDonald Park and along the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. We will have scenic views of northwest forests and Snoqualmie Valley farmland. The hike will be between four and six miles in length, and most of it will follow an old railroad grade to accommodate physical distancing. All levels are welcome and encouraged to be a part of this day hike!

A few notes regarding this experience and COVID-19:

  • We will continue to monitor COVID-19 case numbers and risk factors in King County as the trip date nears. While we hope for the best, we also prioritize the health and safety of our students and faculty. With that in mind, we want to remind you that this trip may be cancelled if the risk of COVID-19 transmission becomes too high.
  • With the help of Sierra Maxwell, our Health Coordinator, we have drafted a set of Outdoor Program COVID-19 Guidelines. Part of the pre-trip meetings with students and faculty will be to review and set expectations for following these guidelines.
  • Students and families must provide their own transportation. If this creates a barrier to your student coming on the hike, please contact Nathan Franck.

Sign-up information can be found here.
