As we approach the end of this term and first semester, it is very pleasing to see that our students and staff are able to be engaged and participating in a full range of activities once again. The Athletics Carnival was held last week and it was great to see students participating in the events. A big congratulations must go to the House Captains for their great style and colourful promotion of their House colours.
Sporting success continues with Bailey Whitton of Year 10 maintaining his outstanding achievements in swimming by adding more medals to his already impressive tally of school, zone, regional and state events by winning two silver medals at the All Schools Swimming Carnival held at Olympic Park. Well done Bailey on a great year in swimming, well deserved.
Mia Bales was named Emerging Country Player of the tournament after she and Chelsea Hall were both chosen in the North Coast Senior Football (Soccer) Team. These two young ladies are talented players and worthy representatives of the school and their families. Congratulations girls, well done! These are just two highlights of the many sporting events students and staff are pursuing this term. Others include tennis, football, volleyball, futsal, athletics and cross country. Well done to all students for their great participation and skill level, and staff for the time and effort in training and supporting these students.
The Attendance and Engagement Team have been working to support students and families concentrating on getting students into uniform so they feel they really belong and to encourage them to become fully engaged in their own learning. Please let us know if your family needs support with uniform requirements. Attendance is also a major target of the Team this year and the goal we have been set by the DoE is more than 90% attendance for every student. Mr Vonbun is leading this Team and there will be more information on incentives to encourage 90% attendance over the coming months. Pleasingly, more than half of our students have met this milestone already this year.
There is currently a survey available for parents of primary school students and secondary students on travel to school. The link is on our Facebook page and in this newsletter under "Important Notices"and needs to be completed by the 18th June. This will provide valuable information for the DoE on how students get to school and how to improve traffic issues.
A seminar for students in Years 7 and 9 on Make Bullying History was held earlier this week and follows up from the launch of the school’s Anti-Bulling Policy and National Day of Action. This continues to build on our theme of WE CARE.
The NAMBUS visited the school and veterans spoke of their experiences in the Vietnam War and as servicemen. Year 10 students always enjoy hearing real life stories and learn firsthand of the experiences of these brave veterans who gave so generously for all of us. Ms. Baker has advised me that our guests revealed the bus will only be operating for one more year. I thank them for their generosity in supporting students learning to not only our school but to so many schools over such a long time.

Year 11 Construction Students Help the Community
On the 31 May, Year 11 Construction partnered with the Lake Cathie Community Hub to install form work, pour and finish concrete for their community garden.
In a recent DE Science Lesson, students did a live dissection of a chicken wing to show the inner workings of all the muscles, tendons and ligaments. The lesson connected to a recently completed unit on the Human Body. Students were really engaged and fascinated to see how the different muscles worked. They were keen to learn that the chicken wing will still contracted and released when certain muscles were squeezed.
