as "summer days driftin' away"

Holidays, vacations, beaches, parks, festivities, sunshine, heat ... are slowly "driftin' away" as summer comes to its closing days. As the year end start approaching, it is time to get review our annual chores and items completed on our check-lists. One of these could be the filing of our tax returns to Uncle Sam...no? October 15 is the definite due date for the 2017 tax calendar year to file our tax returns and FBARs. Have you completed this task? Did you file an extension back in April or June this year? Well, there's less than a couple of months until our due date and time to not procrastinate any longer and gather up those documents and send them over and get one big task off that check-list! 

Meanwhile, it is also time to look ahead for the tax calendar year of 2018. This is an important tax filing year considering all the changes due to the tax reform in 2017 with the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) by the U.S. Congress. Our newsletters have highlighted several issues during this year. Do you have questions? Concerns? Issues? Write to us and let us know what you want to see in the last newsletters of 2018.

How part-time work in retirement can affect Social Security taxes and Medicare costs

  • If you start taking Social Security before your full retirement age, earning more than $17,040 from work will reduce your benefits temporarily.

  • The Treasury and IRS have proposed new rules to address some of the ambiguity around the new 20 percent qualified business income deduction.
  • “Crack and pack,” a strategy where a business splits itself in two in order to qualify, seems to be dead.
  • Other ways to reduce taxable income and qualify for deductions are still in play.

Do this now to avoid a tax surprise next spring

  • Review your withholding now to make any necessary corrections and avoid a surprise tax bill in April.
  • Unfamiliarity with credits, user error and failure to weigh state and local taxes may yield inaccurate results on the IRS's calculator.
  • Consider your calculator results, but double-check your withholding with your tax preprarer before making changes.

IRS Warns Taxpayers To Remain On Alert For Charitable Scams During Hurricane Season

Currently, the National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories in the Atlantic Ocean for Subtropical Storm Debby and in the Pacific Ocean for Tropical Storm Kristy and Hurricanes Hector and John. It’s been mostly quiet on the U.S. coasts, but according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. averages one to two hurricane landfalls each season.
