Click here TERM 4 WEEK 7 NOVEMBER 21, 2018 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEThe Value of an Active and Supportive P&F Thanks to the support of the P&F new BenQ, smart TVs are being installed in the Year 1 to 4 classrooms to replace the interactive whiteboards which, I am guessing, have given us well over eight years of service. The teachers’ computers are also being upgraded to new Surface Pro devices that will replace their existing laptops which are a mix of between three to five-year-old devices. The combination of Surface Pro and BenQ works well allowing teachers to maximise the benefit of each. Having a standard setup in each room will enable better and more effective development of teacher skills in integrating digital technology into student learning experiences. This aspect, upskilling in the use of the teacher device and coupling it with the all that the BenQ offers, will begin during those pupil free days at the end of the year. Again, I sincerely thank all OLG families who, through paying the P&F Levy and supporting that organisation’s fundraising activities, have made this possible. A near-term project will be to introduce a more standard approach to the devices our students use at school but that is for the future. We are confident that the Surface Pro/BenQ combination will work equally well with whichever platform, or combination of platforms, is chosen for our students. We now have a top class network infrastructure and are about to complement this top class teacher/classroom hardware and staff PD. The next step is student devices. School Fees On another level Catholic schools are businesses and, as such, rely heavily on families to financially contribute to their operating costs through school fees. Federal Government policies over the past years have placed an increasing demand on school communities to contribute to the cost of their Private or Catholic school’s operating costs according to that school community’s perceived “Capacity to Contribute”. You will be pleased to know that, in general, OLG families are considered by the Australian Government, to have quite a high Capacity to Contribute (rated equal 16th in the state out of 266 and 9th of 142 WA Catholic schools) – as a collective, they think you are comfortably off! School Photos LAP - EXPRESSION OF INTEREST It focuses on the wellbeing, emotional and social needs of students through the powerful and positive contribution of trained mentors. All LAP volunteers must complete training to participate in the program. They must have a valid Working with Children Card, follow the OLG Code of Conduct and adhere to the requirements of Confidentiality. We are fortunate to have many volunteers at our school that are happy to commit to supporting children that would benefit from one to one time for half an hour each week. This time may be spent setting goals that will then be worked on to aim for successful learning in the classroom, it may involve the child pursuing a hobby, they may participate in confidence building activities, there are many possibilities on how the time is used. It does not involve tutoring or extra time for completion of school work. Potentially LAP:
Please contact Nerida Hince via the email below if you think your child would benefit from participating in LAP in 2018. Participation is voluntary, and the sessions may be ongoing, long term or short-term support/help. THIS FRIDAY!! Family Fun Night – 23rd November NEXT WEEK!! On the weekend of 24th/25th November at all masses the Plenary Council Candle will be lit at the beginning of each mass and the Plenary Council Prayer will be said asking the spirit to guide us on this journey. A short video will be screened after the homily to further explain what is Plenary Council. A morning tea will take place after the 9.30 mass on Sunday.
