1. Third firm recalls baby formula from Spanish factory as outbreak continues

14.02.2019. Europe. Salmonella

Laboratorios Ordesa S.A. has recalled rice milk formula made at a Spanish factory suspected to be the source of a Salmonella outbreak. Combined with the first two companies’ recalls, implicated baby formulas could have been sold in at least 18 countries via retailers and online sellers.

2. Denmark E. coli outbreak declared over; Salmonella investigation continues

Danish officials have ended an investigation into an outbreak of E. coli that affected almost 40 people, which was suspected to be linked to beef salami. They are continuing to look at a Salmonella monophasic Typhimurium outbreak that has sickened almost 50 people.

4. New report shows global shift in use of antibiotics in animals

Figures released in a new report today by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) show positive global progress on the regulation and monitoring of antimicrobial use in animals. The report aims to build the capacity of all countries to collect critical data on the use of antimicrobials in animals.

5. Raw is risky: Drug-resistant brucellosis linked to raw milk

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health officials are investigating potential exposures to Brucella strain RB51 (RB51) in 19 states, connected to consuming raw (unpasteurized) milk from Miller’s Biodiversity Farm in Quarryville, Pennsylvania.

6. Irish survey finds ‘risky’ food safety behavior among most consumers

Nearly half of the Irish population does not pay full attention to use-by dates, according to a Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) survey. And, more than six in 10 people in Ireland leave leftovers to cool out of the fridge overnight.

8. Food recalls in final quarter of 2018 reveal problems with bacteria, labeling

Bacterial contamination was the No. 1 cause of almost all recalls posted by the USDA during the fourth quarter of 2018, while undeclared allergens were the top cause for recalls of food under the FDA’s jurisdiction.

9. Food fraud fine ‘not fit for purpose’: BEIC

Food fraud should be subjected to stronger deterrents after a Dutch trader, convicted of fraudulently selling contaminated eggs as fit for human consumption, was fined €30,000 (£26,260), the British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) has argued.
