MEDIA ADVISORY:
Local Transportation Committee to Award Contract to
Study Transit Improvements to Address Interstate 80 Congestion

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 26, 2015
Contact:
Zakhary Mallett
BART District 7 Director
510-815-9320

At the March 27 meeting of the West Contra Costa Transportation Advisory Committee (WCCTAC), the committee board is expected to vote on awarding a contract for the study of high-capacity transit improvements that can alleviate congestion on the Interstate 80 corridor in West Contra Costa County.  The study will competitively evaluate different technology and alignment options, including a BART extension, other rail technology options, ferry services, and expanded express bus options, that can best connect northern West Contra Costa County communities with existing BART service or the education and employment destinations traveled to by local residents.

The study will include at least six (6) public outreach meetings and will mark the first time since 1992 that a BART extension in West Contra Costa County has been studied.

The local BART Director, Zakhary Mallett, expressed this study being “an important first step in bringing equitable transit investment to a historically underinvested corridor, despite the corridor never ceasing to be among the most-congested in the region.”

The study is expected to take approximately one year to complete, cost about $1 million, and is funded cooperatively between BART, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), WCCTAC, and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA).  Both CCTA and WCCTAC are funded through Contra Costa County Measure J tax dollars.
