DOMINO’S HAWAIIAN SPAGHETTI PIZZAMove over hot dogs and burger-inspired pizzas, Domino’s New Zealand has launched a new Hawaiian Spaghetti pizza. For this limited time offer, Domino’s is partnering with Wattie’s canned spaghetti, adding pineapple, glazed ham and mozzarella cheese. Watties’ has been an iconic brand in New Zealand households since the 1930s. According to 2018 research, Domino’s Pizza is visited or purchased from by 15% of New Zealanders in an average four weeks, ahead of competitors Pizza Hut (9.7%), and local brand Hell Pizza (4.8%). It is the 2nd most popular fast food outlet for Generation Z, after McDonald’s, but is fourth for all other generations. 2. PEPERAMI SAUSAGE ROLLSMeanwhile the innovation from Jack Link’s Peperami brand just keeps on coming. Recently we talked about Pep’d Up, the brand’s first chicken snack. Another new product on the market is Peperami’s Pastry Rolls which has caused a big stir on social media. Their signature pork salami wrapped in puff pastry was created for a “properly satisfying snack” and goes on sale in Asda this weekend. 3. SAINSBURY’S HAS A CRUSSHHealthy grab-and-go operator Crussh is continuing its ‘not on the high street’ expansion into grocery retail stores around London. Partnering with Sainsbury’s, Crussh 'fit food' will be rolled out to 61 stores after a successful trial in 10 stores last year. The exclusive food-to-go range includes healthy snack pots, salads and wraps such as Spicy Chipotle Chicken Wrap and 'Glorious Greens’ health pot. Similar to previous sushi ventures, this initiative offers healthy convenience options for Sainsbury’s customers whilst attracting new customers to the food-to-go aisle. 4. THINK YOU KNOW PIZZA?Although pizza originated in Italy you can find numerous variations of it throughout the USA. Americans consume an estimated 100 yards of pizza daily, and a number of regional styles have emerged over the years. We all know Chicago are famous for their Deep Pan and that New Yorkers like their thin crust. But did you know that gourmet toppings dominate California and in Detroit pizza is baked in a square-shaped steel pan? For a type of pizza you can’t get anywhere else visit a Beau Jo’s in Colorado where you will find the original mountain pie, made of a braided crust and loaded with toppings. KAUFLAND GETS THE BUGOutdoor eating is taking on a whole new meaning. Ahead of the upcoming summer BBQ season, German supermarket chain Kaufland has introduced new burgers containing insect-based ingredients. The patties combine protein powder from buffalo worms (approximately one third of patty) with vegetables, offering a protein-rich alternative to beef burgers, with the additional benefit of nutrients such as vitamin B and omega-3 fatty acids. It follows popular German burger chain Hans im Glück launch of their insect burger "The day after tomorrow” back in February. 6. NO MORE FOOD WASTEFood waste and sustainability overall is rising up the consumer agenda. The UN Sustainable Development Goal is to halve per capita global food waste by 2030. Britain currently wastes over 10 tonnes of food every year, the majority from households with 1.8mn caused by further down the chain by food manufacturers, 1mn tonnes by the hospitality sector, and 260,000 tonnes by retailers. Recently Tesco claims to at the forefront of driving change in this area - some 63% of its food waste is redistributed to charities, community groups, colleagues and animal feed. It has managed to reduce the amount of food going to waste by 17% from last year. 7. TRAFFIC JAM WHOPPERBurger King has developed a new ‘Traffic Jam Whopper’ service which provides city commuters with the option to have a Whopper delivered to their car – as they are stuck in traffic. The delivery service was trialled in Mexico City where it uses real-time traffic data to determine heavily congested areas, and Waze banner ads and digital billboards that alert drivers when the delivery service is available to them. The ads cleverly remind drivers how much time they have left to order through the Burger King app. The delivery range changes depending on where the traffic is, and it’s always within a three-kilometre radius of a BK restaurant. 8. NANDO'S ON BOARDJet 2 will become the first airline to offer a cheeky Nando’s 30,000 feet up in the air. The budget airline has teamed up with Nando’s to offer two all-time favourite products for holiday makers – albeit its signature peri-peri chicken isn’t on the menu just yet. The Nando’s box includes hummus, pitta chips and peri-peri drizzle, or you could choose some half-popped corn for a snack. A voucher for the chain will also be inserted into the seat pocket for a free meal when you’re back on the ground. Jet2 has already made a number of changes to their in-flight menu, and say there is more to come for the holiday season. 9. WASABI EXPANDS Wasabi, the Japanese-inspired fast food chain, has sold a minority stake to investment firm Capdesia Group for its expansion and refurbishment programme, further to a £30mn investment last March. This will allow Wasabi to expand its portfolio in both the UK and USA where it currently has 55 stores (UK) and 5 (US). Wasabi is popular for its focus on healthy Japanese food, especially sushi and bento. More recently, Wasabi has expanded its products into the ready meal market following an exclusive agreement with Sainsburys. Recently Wasabi launched a ready meal range into Sainsbury’s.
