TRIPLE THE FUNMcDonald’s is currently testing Triple Cheeseburgers containing three patties and three slices of cheese in 60 restaurants across the UK and 9 in Ireland. If the trial proves successful, the new menu item will be launched across all UK and Irish locations, retailing at £2.39/€2.90. Triple Cheeseburgers were previously launched during the 1994 World Cup in the UK known as the Hattrick Burger and are currently on the menu across the U.S and Australia. 2. DOMINO’S HITS 17,000Domino's celebrated its 17,000th store opening in Bradbury, Australia. During the store’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, customers could get free pizza with 17 boxes hiding a ‘golden slice’ worth $1,000AUD in cash. The brand opened its first international store in Winnipeg, Canada back in 1983 and last year, Domino's total global retail sales was over $14.3 billion. More than $7 billion of that total came from the U.S. with the remaining $7.3 billion coming from 90+ markets globally. 3. KFC’S KENTACOKFC Singapore has launched its new Kentaco- a taco with a Kentucky fried chicken shell. The new menu item has a deep-fried chicken filet marinated and breaded with KFC’S special seasoning, cheese sauce, shredded cheese, lettuce, and chopped tomatoes. Last year, KFC Philippines introduced the chaco (a chicken taco) and while the Chaco was more similar to Taco Bell’s Naked Chicken Chalupa, the Kentaco appears more like KFC's fried chicken in appearance. 4. COSTA’S SPRING TOASTIES & MOREThis week, Costa launched a variety of food offerings, both sweet and savoury for Spring. The three new toastie flavours include a New York Deli Pastrami & Emmental Toastie, Cumberland Sausage & Caramelised Onion Toastie and a Three Cheese & Chutney Toastie. Fans of the classic British Ham & Cheese Toastie will be pleased to hear it now comes with 20% more ham. On the sweet side, a Chocolate & Caramel muffin made with Rolo and a Salted Caramel Brownie are also available on the Costa’s March menu. 5. FOOD TO GO RADARFood Futures Insights identified 5 major areas for food-to-go operators to have on their radar. There is a notable focus on “freshness and convenience” in this sector. This year has seen Sainsbury’s improve their store layout and introduce food-to-go counters and a sushi bar. Meanwhile in the Netherlands, jumbo city stores are proving a success, whilst focusing on foodservice counters within the store. Companies are collaborating with each other to provide more convenience to customers, such as Q8 and Delhaize in Belgium. 6. MARCO’S PIZZA BOWLSMarco’s Pizza omits the crust with the launch of their new Specialty Pizza Bowls. These bowls are available in 3 different options; The Deluxe Pizza Bowl with pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, and onions, baked with the brand’s original sauce and three signature cheeses. The All Meat Pizza Bowl offers pepperoni, ham, Italian sausage, bacon, original sauce, and three signature cheeses. Finally, the Garden Pizza Bowl is filled with mushrooms, black olives, onions, tomatoes, feta cheese, the brand’s signature three cheeses, original pizza sauce, Romesan seasoning and garlic sauce. Prices vary by location, but the new Specialty Pizza Bowls will be retailing at approximately $8.49. 7. WAGAMAMA EXCELSWagamama delivery sales amounted to 12% of their total sales in 2019, with the brand planning to open 3-5 more delivery kitchens throughout the UK in 2020. They currently operate 3 locations strategically placed in high demand areas not covered by their restaurants. The company is also trialling a pay-on-phone function which will allow the elimination of the customer’s wait for the bill at the end of their meal. The Restaurant Group, Wagamama’s owner, attributes the success to the brand’s technological and operational improvements in both restaurants and delivery services. 8. SNACKING: WHAT, WHEN & WHYSnacking is an ever-evolving category and U.S. research group, Cargill, has shared findings from their recent survey of 1,200 consumers on their snack preferences. Satisfying a craving is the leading reason to snack with a balance of 41% preferring savoury and 38% opting for sweeter options. One in four respondents reportedly eat a snack bar daily between lunch and dinner. The research group sees future growth in functional snack options with all-in-one nutritional benefits. 9. CHICKEN BURGER OVERLOAD Honest Burger has teamed up with Wingmans to create a Thai Fried Chicken burger. This co-creation is available for the month of March and features a buttermilk fried chicken thigh with honey sriracha glaze, Thai slaw, crispy shallots and cheese. Wingmans’ homemade honey sriracha sauce takes 24 hours to make using kaffir lime leaves, coriander and lemongrass. Additionally, Checkers and Rally’s has introduced two new Mother Cruncher chicken sandwiches. The Classic Mother Cruncher features chicken breast that is coated and lightly fried then topped with the brand’s new signature Squawk Sauce and the Bacon BBQ Mother Cruncher is made with fried chicken, Sweet and Smokey BBQ sauce, crispy onions, melted cheese and bacon.
