Gender Reassignment Surgery: What Are Patients' Priorities?
What outcomes do patients hope for when they have female-to-male gender reassignment surgery?
Scientists say there are a wide range of answers.
Generally, this surgery involves the creation of male genitalia. But there are several different techniques, and results can vary. Knowing patients' priorities can help clinicians determine the best approach.
The research team surveyed 47 transmen in Sweden. The patients had gender dysphoria; they were born female, but did not identify themselves that way. They were interested in making a female-to-male surgical transition.
Sexual attributes, like the ability to have an erection and reach orgasm, were important to most of the patients. Some wanted the ability to urinate standing up, while others hoped to have genitalia that looked "passable."
What else was important to the transmen? Find out here.
