MCDONALD’S & COSTA ON THE GOMcDonald's new Grab and Go concept in Fleet Street is prioritising transactional speed and driving footfall. The trial format has no seating available, smaller self-order screens, new packaging and a reduced menu. The menu will incorporate new salads in the pipeline for later this year. This will give them the flexibility to test new formats, tailored to the local area. Meanwhile Costa Coffee is rolling out its mobile ordering service to over 500 participating stores. Costa Coffee has overall 3,882 stores nationwide, the app enables customers to pre order and pay through the app from the full menu for collection. 2. GROUPE BERTRAND ACCELERATES GROWTHGroupe Bertrand continues its acquisition path, having already added Quick, Frères Blanc, and Groupe Flo to its portfolio since 2015. The latest addition is Leon de Bruxelles, the ‘fries and mussels’ casual dining concept (82 outlets, turnover €117mn in 2018), the majority share (61%) sold by investment fund Eurazeo PME for €24mn. In other consolidation news, La Boucherie has acquired the 78 Poivre Rouge restaurant chain from Les Mousqetaires – boosting its 153 outlets to over 200, and significantly enhancing its nationwide presence.
3. URBAN EAT 'FOOD WITH ATTITUDE'UK food manufacturer Adelie has refreshed and expanded its food-to-go Urban Eat range, launched with a £5mn marketing push over the next 3 years. The Urban Eat portfolio now has more than 200 products under four ‘Food with Attitude’ headings; Urban Eat Core (classic flavours, best sellers, premium and light ); Urban Eat Deli (coffee shop-inspired cold and hot including toasties, paninis and hot boxes); and newcomers Urban Eat Street (global street food-style products such as topped naans, flatbreads, burritos), and Urban Eat Roots (vegetarian and vegan sandwiches and wraps, where it has partnered with Quorn for 6 new products). 4. SUBWAY TESTS BEYOND MEAT SUBSubway is partnering with Beyond Meat, the Los Angeles-based producer of meat substitutes, to test exclusive plant-based protein options. Starting this September, Subway will test the Beyond Meatball Marinara sub in participating restaurants in North America. Beyond Meat’s products became available across the US in 2013, targeting the 39% US flexitarian consumers trying to eat more plant-based foods (Plant Based News). You may have heard of vegetarians, pescatarians, flexitarians but what about reducetarians? Next month the Reducetarian Summit 2019 will be held in Washington to bring together worldwide perspectives on the plant-based movement. 5. WHY QSRS EMBRACE MEAL DELIVERYWhile higher costs can eat into profit margins, there are several reasons why global QSR brands are embracing new delivery channels. Delivery has the potential to boost incremental sales and profits, attract new customers and capture consumer data. BRISKET BOOMS IN THE USBeef brisket is booming in the US with QSR chains Qdoba, Arby’s and Quizinos all introducing smoked beef brisket to their menus. Qdoba Mexican Eats has added a new Smoked Brisket Keto Bowl, appealing to those following this dietary lifestyle trend as well as providing a memorable flavour experience. Check out Arby’s new Bourbon BBQ Stack sandwich or Quizinos Pit-Smoked Brisket Sandwich, both loaded generously with smoky brisket. US brisket prices are rising in response to heightened demand, stemming from its wider availability and new technologies harnessing the ‘low n slow’ cooking technique. While the US is ramping up beef production, it hasn't been enough to keep up with Americans' growing appetite for brisket.
7. THE FUTURE OF OFFICE CATERINGHelloFresh Go has received new funding from Bitburger, Vorwerk and others. The German B2B company was spun off from global meal kit sender HelloFresh as a wholly owned subsidiary in October 2018. It supplies ‘next generation vending machines’ - IOT (Internet of Things) refrigerators filled with ready meals, snacks and drinks to office kitchens. It plans to save workers from wasting time going to a canteen or café during lunch by selling meals for €5 or less. Customers can pay with an ID card or fingerprint and companies pay a monthly rent for the machine depending on their needs and service cost. 8.
