Eric Wright Exhibition:"Ohio Lands"November 26, 2020 – February 1, 2021In his exhibition "Ohio Lands" available to view online, Eric Wright engages in a fantasy memory game with the landscape of his rural home in Mt. Gilead, Ohio, and the aspirations of its founders and settlers "who chose to stamp their conquests as righteous by name at least."
Ohio Lands paintings in Wright's London studio Born Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Wright lived in NY in the 1980s where his painting techniques were influenced by the TV maestro Bob Ross. Selected for the artist residency at the Banff Centre by pop artist Greg Curnoe, he later relocated to London.
Manasseh Cutler's Dream (Collisions), Eric Wright (2020). Oil on canvas, 12 × 16 in. / 30 × 40 cm"I started contemplating a small series of paintings about Mt. Gilead, Ohio more than five years ago. At the time, The Handmaids Tale was still unknown to me. Margaret Atwood’s novel was published in 1985, the year I left Mt. Gilead for good. I didn’t have a plan for leaving, I only knew that I had to go and I wanted to go somewhere completely
opposite of where I was. New York was the only choice."
Thou Hast Faith, I Have Works (Signifiers), Eric Wright (2020). Oil on canvas, 9 × 12 in. / 24 × 30 cm"It went beyond that of course and meeting fellow artist Cathy Ward was another big change, one that brought me to London and even further from 'home' in Ohio." "I never gave it much thought once I was away, what the places were doing to me."
The Siren Hails As So The Sky (Signifiers), Eric Wright (2020). Oil on canvas, 12 × 16 in. / 30 × 40 cm"For many years, it was just the distance, the inability to be drawn back to painful memories that mattered. I could not escape myself though, and the things that caused pain followed me and were active in my paintings. It took until this project to complete the circle of my relation to Mt. Gilead and Ohio."
Outside In Virtual Exhibition:"Art & Activism"Opens Tuesday 10
December; launch event at 6pm GMTOutside In's Virtual Gallery will see a series of exhibitions through the year by guest curators. "Art & Activism" is the second of these and is curated by Helen Wewiora – the Director/Artistic Director of Castlefield Gallery. Register for the Zoom Private View by clicking here.
“Having recently participated in the panel 'Isn't all art activism?', part of the online Peer to Peer: HK/UK Festival 2020, I was keen to explore the Outside In collection through a similar lens." "My contributions to the panel discussion drew from my experiences of working with Venture Arts (Manchester), an award-winning visual arts charity supporting people with learning disabilities to reach their full potential through arts and culture, and Castlefield Gallery’s long-standing partner."
"Lockdown Lullaby III // Hypnotic Manipulation", by Helen Nelson (2020) "My more recent pre and post COVID discussions with Amanda Sutton of Venture Arts, who is also acting as the interim Director
for Outside In, have been centred around the socio-political voice of learning disabled people and artists." “Whilst it was inevitable the Peer to Peer: HK/UK panellists would not agree on every matter, it was clear we all, like with Amanda, firmly believe activism can come in many forms and there can be as much power in slower, seemingly 'quieter' acts as there can be from direct action."

time. I very much hope you enjoy exploring the exhibition."
The Finster ArchivesA new Facebook group has been created by John Turner to document the work of Howard Finster: The Finster Archives. Join the group to explore the depths of Finster's life and amazing artworks.
Howard Finster; photo: The Finster Archives It's intention is to add documentation to the thousands of paintings, sculptures and Paradise Garden elements created by Howard Finster which have generally been overlooked by academics, gallerists, writers and collectors.
Howard Finster; photo: The Finster Archives This oversight is probably the result of the sheer volume of the signed and numbered works created by Howard (over 46,000 spanning a carer of 25 years), and the relatively few pieces that went through the gallery/museum system.
Howard Finster; photo: The Finster Archives The site also includes the writings of Reverend Finster, which include sermons, tracts, songs, poems and “thought cards”, photos of Howard, at the Garden, in workshops, at Museums and attending gallery openings are encouraged, as he was once considered the most photographed artist of
90s.
