X University Return to Campus PlanAs gear up to the beginning of the Fall semester, many students (as well as faculty and staff) are unaware of the full return to campus plan. CESAX is committed to continuing to push the university and province to release more information and prioritize student safety with open communication. That is why we have been fighting for student representation at the university’s Health & Safety Committee. The most recent update from the university is Required Attestation for Vaccination for students, staff and faculty returning to the campus in the Fall. CESAX Orientation: Welcome Back!Register for Navigating Academic Success: CE & PT OrientationAre you excited to return to campus in September but not sure what to expect? Join CESAX and campus partners for our Navigating Academic Success Webinar Series. Understanding online/hybrid learning with Zoom, D2L and Google SuiteMonday, August 30 - 5pm-6pm This session will provide an introduction to studying online at X University and how to access your coursework ahead of class. Through this session we will discuss how to access your course shells on D2L and the different Google Programs you have access to through your university email. Additionally, we will discuss online etiquette related to participating in Zoom classrooms, communicating with your instructors and how to meaningfully engage in a digital learning environment. Speaker: Michael Dick, Lecturer at School of Professional Communication Navigating Academic Integrity and Student RightsTuesday, August 31 - 5pm-6pm Post-secondary education can be an intimidating experience with different types of coursework, group projects, essays, labs, midterms and exams. Along with the academic work, there are also a number of academic rights and responsibilities students are expected to adhere to. Join CESAX and the Academic Integrity Office to learn about academic integrity and policies and what proactive steps you can take to avoid academic misconduct. We will also have an opportunity to discuss student rights and advocacy options you have to ensure you are treated fairly and equitably. Speakers: Allyson Miller, Academic Integrity Specialist and Lyndall Musselman, CESAX Student Advocate Accessing Online Learning Support & Accommodations SupportTuesday, September 7 - 5pm-6pm As a student you may encounter barriers to accessing education or face a few challenges with particular requirements in your curriculum. This workshop will cover the various resources available through Student Learning Support and explain some basics about Academic Accommodation Support (AAS), which is available for students with disabilities. Remember, academic accommodations are more than just physical barriers and this is a stigma-free space. Speakers: Claire Lowenstein and Annie Wilkin, Academic Accommodation Support Prioritizing and Maintaining Mental Health & Wellbeing in Academic ConsiderationWednesday, September 8 - 5pm-6pm Taking care of mental health while navigating uncertainties of life during COVID, school and other responsibilities is not easy. In this workshop, the Health Promotion coordinator shares strategies for self-care, and resources available for CESAX students such as peer support and Wellness workshops in the upcoming year. We are also joined by our Student Rights coordinator at CESAX for how to acquire academic consideration on grounds of mental health when things do get overwhelming. The University will be having a student services fair where you can learn about a number of student services in person, as well as meet CESAX and other tenants of the Student Centre. RSVP for events to save your spot!Federal Elections on the Horizon: Students still awaiting Bold ActionStudents are gearing up for an unscheduled Fall Federal Elections now set for Monday, September 20, 2021. With the pandemic still in effect and the short timelines, students will unfortunately not have opportunities to vote at onsite campus locations like we did in 2015 and 2019 Federal Elections.However, it is up to students to organize and put our issues on the table in this election. We are organizing with the Canadian Federation of Students to ensure that political parties are putting strong policies on the table to address a national strategy to demand free education, action on the climate crisis and real action on Indigenous resurgence and good faith dialogue on Canadian-Indigenous relations. Members are encouraged to register for the Elections - especially if you plan to vote by mail (Which can be done by registering to vote). The Student Rights Coordinator is an advocate for students and is recognized by X University in this capacity. Seek guidance from the Student Rights Coordinator to help you navigate the university’s policies and to protect your student rights. Are you concerned about being on Academic Probation, Required To Withdraw (RTW), Standing Variation Withdrawal (SVW) or Permanent Program Withdrawal (PPW)? This webinar will cover the basics about Ryerson’s academic standings and the various options available to students who find themselves facing academic challenges. Qualifying for Fresh Start and the benefits of that program will be explained, reinstatement and transfer processes, as well as a brief overview of appeal options will be covered. Facilitators come from Student Learning Support, RSU, CESAX, XGSU and the Ombudsperson’s Office. How to Write a Strong Appeal
Do you disagree with a final grade or academic standing recently assigned to you? Did you face extenuating circumstances or experience an unfair barrier that caused you to do poorly in your academic performance? If these questions are relevant to you, then this webinar will help you determine if you should file a grade appeal or a standing appeal, or both. Tips on writing a strong appeal will be discussed. Aug 21 | 7pm This virtual live storytelling performance will feature a global cast of 8 individuals who self-identify as women and are survivors of ALL cancers; everyday survivors who are redefining courage and human potential and who tell a personal story of how they have taken their lives back after cancer, using their gifts of life and experience, to give back. All proceeds will benefit the Annie Parker Foundation, including our Paxman Scalp Cooling subsidy funding for Canadian women.
