With over 3000 delegates from all regions of the world it’s a big event with lots of negotiation as countries and regional organisations try to reach a ‘consensus’ agreement – all of which takes time. The eventual output of this conference is an update to the international treaty - the radio regulations. One of the big topics is identifying mmWave spectrum for 5G (IMT - International Mobile Telecommunications). Four years of preparation has gone towards this conference with thousands of hours spent in whittling down the list of candidate bands, studies to see if 5G can share the bands with other radio systems and to see what conditions may be needed to enable 5G to be introduced without causing interference into other radio systems. We are half way through the conference and the negotiations are ongoing and getting tetchy. Global mmWave candidate bands are 26, 40, 50 and 66 GHz with 26 & 40 likely to be identified while 50 and 66 are more uncertain. The big debate is the conditions to protect Satellite systems such as weather monitoring, aircraft and maritime communications, broadband television etc all of which may be impacted with the introduction of 5G in 26 and 40 GHz and so lots of lobbying is in full swing towards the various governments and regulators. Let's see what the outcome is but we are hopeful that reasonable conditions for 5G mmWave are agreed, likely to be on the final night of the conference as the ‘clock is stopped’ and the negotiations continue into the wee hours. The terrestrial industry is busy also trying to secure agenda items for the next WRC in 2023 for additional low and mid band spectrum in the second half of this decade as the amount of spectrum needed to support the ever increasing traffic continues to grow. Once the WRC has concluded and we know the eventual outcome then we anticipate that this will result in more administrations around the world beginning to licence mmWave spectrum over the next few years and make this available for 5G Featured Event | Expression of Interest: 5G for Immersive Technologies - Unlocking the Full PotentialJoin us in exploring the impact and importance of 5G for the Creative Industries and the role of immersive technologies in shaping this sector.
