My Isolation Diary
PWS Rewind By Emily Vogel Dear Diary, 'Tis the season. While the women of Netflix are spending their holiday falling in love with European royalty, I am back on my parents' couch with a bag of Skinny Pop and a homemade Christmas sweater from my Aunt Gerta. Luckily, I have been keeping myself busy re-watching all the amazing conversations from last week's Power Women Summit! That's right, all of the sessions are still available for on-demand viewing on
the PWS Website. It's the gift that keeps on giving. This morning my grandma and I went back and joined 74-Year-Old Fitness Influencer Joan MacDonald for a morning workout, afterwards my 16-year-old cousins shrieked when they got to hear from Alexis Ren and Beanie Feldstein. Life Hack: These free sessions are the perfect way to keep your family entertained while having to stay indoors this holiday season. Who needs to spend Christmas in Europe when you have Annie Lennox playing piano in your living room?! (WARNING: Showing these videos to your family will likely result in you becoming your parents' favorite child.) See additional highlights below.
The ChangeMakers List:
30 Women Who Saved Entertainment in 2020
It was a year like no other. Cameras were turned off, theaters went dark, deals were halted and dreams were put on hold. And then there was the necessary reckoning engendered by the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. The entertainment community took on the role of second responders: Reunions of TV and movie casts and virtual performances of all types raised awareness of and funds for heroic health care providers. At the same time, almost every media entity looked closely at staff and projects to make sure that the reel reflected the real. At our third annual Power Women Summit, we inaugurated the ChangeMakers list, comprised of women who not only survived a challenging year, but soared. View full list here.
How Jameela Jamil Thinks Cancel Culture Should Handle JK Rowling and Others Who ‘Have Done Irrevocable Harm’
Dr. Deepika Chopra (left) and Jameela Jamil (right)
When it comes to the rise of cancel culture, “The Good Place” star Jameela Jamil thinks there are some positive aspects, but that it is vital that people separate “ignorance from evil” when it comes to who we as a society decide to forgive and who is beyond re-acceptance. “I think it’s important to make sure that we are clear on the fact that there are some people who do irrevocable harm and they make the same mistakes repeatedly,” Jameela told Dr. Deepika Chopra during Power Women Summit. Jameela used “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling as an example of someone “who is just doubling down on harmful misinformation sometimes about a certain
group,” following repeated backlash she has received for her comments about transgender people. Read full article here.
Angelica Ross, Imara Jones Want to See More Trans Stories: ‘Take Us Seriously’
(From left to right: Angelica Ross, Imara Jones and Mey Rude)
When transgender powerhouses Angelica Ross and Imara Jones saw that the entertainment and media worlds weren’t telling their community’s stories in a realistic way, they took matters into their own hands. After all, they said, “who controls the story has control.” Ross and Jones spoke with Pride Media’s Mey Rude about trans representation on Wednesday during Power Women Summit 2020. Imara, a renowned journalist, founded TransLash media to tell stories that she felt traditional outlets weren’t approaching correctly. And Angelica, an actress known for her work on “Pose,” is the founder of TransTech, which helps employ trans people in tech roles. Imara noted that many media gatekeepers fail to understand “that us not having stories told about us in a way that humanized us — centered us in a way that everyone else would be centered — is a driving force for the hostility and the marginalization and the violence that we face.” Read full article here.
'Team Marilyn' Wins 'Telling Our Stories'
Short Film Competition
"Telling Our Stories" filmmakers panel at Power Women Summit 2020
As part of Power Women Summit 2020, WrapWomen, STARZ and Women in Film (WIF) announced the winner of this year’s “Telling Our Stories” short film competition, an initiative which highlights films by women and gender non-conforming filmmakers of color, that showcase themes of womanhood, community, and representation. Set on the eve of a game-changing campaign event, the winning film, “Team Marilyn,” by LaToya Morgan (director and executive producer) and Sue-Ellen Chitunya (producer), follows a politician who must decide what to do when a secret scandal erupts a few days out from a historic presidential election. Chosen from more than 1,100 narrative or
documentary short films, Morgan and Chitunya will share a winning prize of $10,000. During the Summit, six finalists of the contest joined a panel discussion on the challenges of making shorts, especially during the pandemic. All six finalists will see their work air on STARZ.
