We identified four Core Values: Grit, Heart, Relationships, and Excellence. Grit, for our forensic interviewers like Annie, who won the trust of a young boy whose mother was concerned that he was being sexually abused by his father. He was so reluctant to talk that he built himself a fort out of the couch cushions in the interview room. Annie worked with him through multiple sessions over several weeks until he felt comfortable enough to disclose multiple terrible incidents of abuse, not just by his father, but by his cousin as well. Heart, for staff like Vera who greets everyone who comes in with a warm, welcoming smile; Kelly who makes sure kids feel comfortable in our waiting room and have snacks to eat; and Amanda who engages children in games and crafts. Small kindnesses make such a difference. Relationships, represented by Kerry, Crimson, and Denny who manage some of our child-centered team approaches to trauma and the many partnerships we have built not just in the city but across the state and country, which allows our impact to go well beyond Baltimore. Excellence, for always asking, “What more can BCAC do? And how can BCAC do it better?” Important questions to ask, because the need keeps increasing. BCAC helps more children and families than ever before—over 1,700 in 2018. Julia and Katie worked to expand mental health services and doubled the size of our team. Joyce walked the corridors of Annapolis and advocated for the passage of bills that protect children, like the Repeat Sex Predator Prevention Act, which allows juries to hear evidence of a predator's other victims. And Rosheda, Drew, Alison, Iona, and Janet trained over 9,600 professionals in 15 states, benefiting over 40,000 children across the country. All of this is only possible because of your generosity, which makes it possible for children and families to start the healing process, and to go from being victims of the worst kinds of trauma to becoming resilient survivors. Within the welcoming walls of BCAC they feel safe, playing and laughing, transforming from victim back to a child. You are the core in our core values. Please make a year end gift to BCAC. With your continued support, we can face the challenges of a new year with grit, heart, relationships and excellence. Thank you, always, for your commitment to making a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable children.
