WELCOME TO ISSUE [98] OF FABRICATE

Dear staff,

Fabricate is the official student newsletter at the Melbourne School of Design. You are receiving this email as a current student or staff member of the Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning.

The image above is of Hallgrímskirkja - a Lutheran (Church of Iceland) parish church in Reykjavík, Iceland.

At 73 metres it is the largest church in Iceland and the sixth tallest architectural structure in Iceland after Longwave radio mast Hellissandur, the radio masts of US Navy at Grindavík, Eiðar longwave transmitter and Smáratorg tower. The church is named after the Icelandic poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614 to 1674), author of the Passion Hymns.

State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson's design of the church was commissioned in 1937. He is said to have designed it to resemble the basalt lava flows of Iceland's landscape. It took 38 years to build the church. Construction work began in 1945 and ended in 1986, the landmark tower being completed long before the church's actual completion. The crypt beneath the choir was consecrated in 1948, the steeple and wings were completed in 1974, and the nave was consecrated in 1986. Situated in the centre of Reykjavík, it is one of the city's best-known landmarks and is visible throughout the city. It is similar in style to the expressionist architecture of Grundtvig's Church of Copenhagen, Denmark, completed in 1940.

Vale Bharat Dave

It is with profound sorrow that we heard the dreadful news that our colleague Professor Bharat Dave died 5 June 2014 in Melbourne after a rapid decline. He was made aware a year ago of his medical condition but he continued to come to the campus and engage with students and staff, sharing our experiences and contributing generously. He taught and researched in computer aided architectural design, a field in which he was a pioneer, and in Indian architectural history.

He collaborated with academics in several other disciplines, including medical education and computer science.

A scholarship has been established in his name in support of students studying in his fields of interest.

By 2010 the event featured 59 buildings, incorporating Docklands precinct in addition to the Central Business District.

By 2012, Open House Melbourne secured more than 100 buildings and diversified the event offerings from commercial, residential and green buildings to places of worship, sporting grounds, electricity substations, Port of Melbourne boat tours, and the chance to explore the history of the tunnels and towers at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Cities Without Slums

CWS is being taught from 21-26 July, requiring attendance all day and work at night.  It is also assumed that students will undertake some preparatory reading and, of course, there is an essay two weeks after the last class.

The subject title is overly hopeful.  Presently one billion persons live in slums and it is projected that by 2030 two billion persons will live in slums.  Proceeding nonetheless ...

The subject has four parts.  The first explains the process of global urbanization, slum formation and the persistence of slums.  The second locates slum upgrading and the provision of basic services in the context of urban governance.  The third considers the roles of the World Bank, UN-Habitat and Cities Alliance in formulating slum upgrading policy.  The fourth explores the experience of community-led slum upgrading through the Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centres (SPARC) and the Indian Alliance, and the Shack/Slum Dwellers International (SDI).

The subject also touches on cross-cutting topics such as climate change adaptation, micro-finance, gender, disaster recovery, ‘replicability’ and ‘scaling up’; and employs case studies of:

•     Kampung Improvement Programme (KIP) in Jakarta
•     Integrated urban development in Kiribati, Central Pacific
•     Pune sanitation precedent and slum upgrading
•     SDI methodology and scaling up slum upgrading.
